I noticed in the post about groceries that many of you mention a price book.

What is it exactly? How does it work for you? Let me in on it! Sounds meticulous and thrifty. I think LOVE it!

I believe it is just their own notes of how prices are at certain stores. They make a little notebook and wirte down the items that they purchase the most and what is the reg. price. I think this is what it is anyway. I could be wrong...

Yes...for me, it's a notebook I keep where I list the prices of items I buy, how much things are at different stores, different sizes of the same product etc

If you record the price per ounce on items, you not only can see which store had the best price but can start to make alternate choices for some kinds of food. Like whether to eat cheese on wheat, lunchmeat on rye, or egg on bagel?

Wow! you gals are good. I can only strive to that level-but am up to the task!

so, if something is more expensive at the store you are at, do you go to another store to compare, or not buy it?

Heck, I make mistakes all the time. I went to one store yesterday and another today. Yesterday, I suspected I could get oatmeal cheaper today and I was right, saving 20 cents on that. Today, I think that I paid 10 cents more for my package of bagels that I would have yesterday. I don't always have something in the price book, sometimes it has gone up.

I only head to the others stores if it seems worth it. How many items, how desparate am I for it, how much will it cost me in gas. A lot of times I skip one store because the couple of items on sale there isn't enough to spend the gas.

Mostly, I stick to specials. I never spend more than $1.99 for meat and hardly ever spend more than .99 for fruits or vegetables. Then I plan my meals around what I got and had on hand.
