I have what I considered a very stable job as a special education teacher. At the end of last year I wanted to stay home with my kids at least part time. The administration worked out a contract that would allow me to be part time in the fall semester and full time in the spring semester with benefits the entire year.
Well lo and behold now the superintendent says the paperwork was not done correctly and that he's not sure my position is even needed. He has posted my job as available, even though I am working it full time and have been for two months without a contract (I was waiting for the school board to approve it which I was assured wouldn't be a problem). And I may possibly have to interview for the job I have held for SIX YEARS!
I am furious and nervous and just shocked at this news. I refuse to interview for it again. I know that may sound stupid, but it's the principle of the thing you know?

The superintendent has had some problems with our special education director all year and tried to do away with her job unsuccessfully (overruled by the school board) and our special ed department is under close scrutiny now and it looks like I may be a casualty of that.

We have a small amount of savings, had just paid off huge credit card bills, and were going to buy a new home (which is way on the back burner now duh). Things were going so well for us for once.

We can live off DH's income I guess, but it would be TIGHT. And I'm not sure I'd even want to teach again.

Sorry this got long, but I've just been slapped in the face with this news first thing at work this morning.

So sorry to hear about your predictament.
Sounds like the superintendent didn't do their job to begin with, he/ she should of made sure that the papers were right to begin with. Also sounds like he/she has a big problem with the whole spec. ed. department to begin with, that's really sad if that's the fact, that could get them into even more probs. down the road.
IMO, if I was you I would be seeking maybe some legal advice on this issue, sounds very very unfair!

If I do end up losing my job my husband wants to get an attorney and fight it. But I just don't know if I want to go through that.

I would contact an attorney before you possibly lose this job, find out your options! Good luck.

If you want to keep your job, I would definitely contact a lawyer. Sorry you have to deal with this.

Do you have a teacher's union? Your rep should be able to bring some weight in for you.

Sounds very political. I feel really sorry for you. I don't know about the legal aspects of it, not having a current contract and all. I probably wouldn't want the job if I had to go to war for it. Would you ever be comfortable afterwards?

Rather than get depressed, maybe you can start looking for opportunities this might offer you. A different direction might be presenting itself to you.

I made a wonderful change when I couldn't ethically continue at my old job.
Think positive.

I, too, am sorry you are having to deal with this political problem. However, I agree with Cathleeninn. Maybe this presents wonderful opportunities you would not have noticed had you continued doing what you've done for years.

I had a similar experience and came out better on the other end. I am a single mother receiving no child support. I lost my faculty position following Hurricane Katrina. I had been wanting to simplify my life and find better balance but never seemed able to figure it out as I was always under deadlines and never had time to think about how to put together something that would work for my son and me. The fact that I had no income following H. Katrina, but had time to think about life helped me put together a situation that works really well for me. I now work from home, am here when my son is here, and make more money than I did in my "secure" university position. I wish you much luck in finding the silver lining in this apparent disaster.
