To me, debt is anything that is an outstanding balance that I can't pay off at once. That includes mortgage and car.

I currently consider my debt as consisting of a mortgage, second mortgage and 2 auto loans... Once all of those are paid off, then I would consider myself "debt free".

I consider the credit cards, car loan & mortgage as debt. However, I think of the CCs as stupid debt. The mortgage doesn't bother me as much; we have to have someplace to live. If we didn't have the mortgage, we would be paying rent instead.
