Now, some of you may disagree with me, but what I didn't like was how the one lady interviewed, (who used to be able to spend whatever she wanted, go traveling, not even look at the cost of things) was said to represent most of Americans. Frankly, I didn't care to hear this woman bellyache. She sat there feeling sorry for herself that she lived it up for years, didn't save any money, and now wants to know when the economy will get better.

Don't misunderstand. Anyone who makes alot of money should be able to then spend it how they see fit. But someone like her who acted so irresponsibly, and then cries, "Whoe is me" I have little sympathy for.

I wish Oprah would have interviewed people who were not only struggling now, but struggling even before the Recession hit (while this woman was off traveling around the country and having "the best of the best" as she put it). I think that would have represented most Americans. At least, all the Americans I know!
ITA. I think it's so funny when Oprah seems like she really understands what people struggling with money issues are going through. I understand that she had a very difficult childhood/youth but she has been rich/successful for so long that she just can't relate to (for example) a family of four in debt w/one income. My father is alot like this... he's very well off and when my dh asked him for a raise so we could afford a house without being completely house poor he told dh that he paid him enough. We are only looking for houses in the under $200,000 range, (we can't afford more) and I haven't been able to find work. We have to move pretty far from the city (Chicago) to even find anything with good schools that's not a total rehab! I think people like that don't have any idea what things actually cost and how hard it is to get by.

Wow, I agree. I was really disappointed in Suze's attitude. She is not my favourite money person in the world but I also found her snotty and condescending. She told those people off who were just trying to ask for advice, "Don't try to tell me you know anything about your mutual fund. I did my research and you don't know a thing." Shaming people and treating people like they are stupid isn't going to help teach anyone anything.

It's why I like Dave Ramsey. He has the heart of a teacher and at least listens to people and admits he has done stupid too. He'd just a normal guy teaching common sense, not someone sounding all snotty about how she knows more than anyone else. I listen to his podcasts daily ~ they are free ~ on itunes. I put it on my shuffle and listen while I clean up the house.
