My dh and I don't have dental insurance right now. He could get it through work in July. I'm wondering if I should just look for an individual plan and not go through his employer ( I think they have a waiting period). I need my wisdom teeth pulled (dh needs another pulled) in the future and I also need fillings. Not sure if I should wait, pay out of pocket till then or look for a dental ins. provider w/ no waiting period and pay around $50 a month. Also, I have a dentist app. next week to get some cavities taken care of and that bill will be around $400. eek!

I'm sorry that I can't help you. But it's like you read my mind...I have been wondering the same thing. Thanks for posting your question..I'm curious about what people will say.

I can't give you specific advice about your own situation, but I do have dental insurance and can share what I know about mine. The big thing that is covered usually 100% is PREVENTATIVE care...in other words, regular checkups and cleaning. All other work, such as the fillings, tooth removal etc they only pay a portion but usually not all. I'm not sure if your wisdom teeth are actually bothering you now, or just they've been recommended to be removed. They're wanting me to get my children's (teens) wisdom teeth removed, but I'm doing it after they're out of school as it's not an emergency, just something they're recommending so they don't crowd their teeth. So if you're not having problems now, I guess I'd suggest waiting on anything not urgent until you have the insurance. Even if they don't pay it all, like ours, some is a help.

i would find out the specifics of the plan from dh's work it should be far less than 50 bucks a month.. we pay under 10 bucks a month thru dh's employer for the entire family. most dental insurances are standard and pay ruffly the same amount for dental care most have an maximum of 1500-2000 a year that they will pay (that goes fast if you have any dental work needing to be done).. do you have a dental school near you??? i would check with some nearby universities and see you can save a bundle(i've been having all my dental work done there wisdom teeth and all) ours will take a payment plan plus your insurance and their costs are a fraction of the price and a liscensed dental instructor supervises your work done. i got all 4 of my wisdom teeth out for a whopping 145.00.. worth a check into even if you have to drive a little ways(its over an hour for me)

Maybe you'll be in luck!

Your wisdom teeth extractions might be covered under your medical insurance. When I had mine removed, it was considered surgery and my medical insurance (BC/BS of Mass.) covered the procedure, NOT my dental insurance. I went to an oral surgeon...not sure if would have been covered if the dentist had extracted them himself, but you should absolutely check with your health insurance plan to make sure.

If you have a dental school near by, check them out. I know my grandma goes to one near her and she gets AWESOME rates on all sorts of things done on her teeth. They are students, but watched and monitored very closely!

I wish you luck - I've been there. If you can wait, I'd suggest waiting for July. If not, I suggest talking to your dentist. They are VERY willing to work with you to keep you as a ciient, and are ususally open to payment plans and reduced rates for non-insured patients ( I know this first hand!).

I would get some specifics on what coverage you will have come July and what your out-of-pocket expense will be before trying to find a policy on your own.

I called the hr lady from dh's work. If the plan doesn't change in July, we're looking at ~60/mo. out of dh's check, no waiting period on services (basic or major). There is no waiting period for this dental ins. I looked up on the internet and its $50 a mo. The hr lady said they won't know if the plan will change come July or not, so I'm not sure what to do.

We got dental thru work mostly for preventative, you never know with 3 kids what might come up. I still have all 4 of my wisdom teeth, my dentists laughs and says he would have recommended they come out too, but they're in great shape, and I have no crowding. They're actually the only teeth in my mouth without a filling practically. I like having insurance since I have kids, without kids, I would look at my situation and reconsider. I can always put off my own dental work, but like having the kids done when necessary. Good luck in your decision.
