I try to keep gifts at a maximum of $30/person or event. If it is really close friends/family I raise it to $50 - but that's very rare and maybe 4 times a year at the most.

We do roughly the same. We've got a large family and just recently decided to just buy for the kids at xmas and bdays. We usually spend 25-30 on the child at each occasion. Weddings are now a rare thing for us with most of our friends and family married, but that gift amount can range between 100 and 150 depending on relationship etc...
Gift expenses can really add up fast. I have been resorting to just a thoughtful written card (for thank yous, 40 bday parties etc...) When we were dual income before the kids, we spared no expense so I guess I am kinda coasting on that people know our finances are different with me at home now but that we were very generous when we could be...

It would be extremely odd for me to spend more then $20 on a gift for someone besides my kids. Actually I would rarely spend more than $10. I still get nice things, though, I just shop the clearances.

I only have a set amount when it comes to my kids b-days. They get $50. They love to pick out their own gifts. As for everyone else, I spend the year picking up great deals and then just store them in my storage closet. For example I got pj's for $2.00 so that is part of my nephews b-day gifts for this year. Weddings of course are different, we usually give a gift of money.

I used to be like that, but now people who visit us bring big gifts and I feel cheap not to spend at least 30 bucks. I guess should start searching for gifts before hand than to run to the store at the last minute.

We have a set limit of $15 for birthdays and other occassions, for family and friends. I can always get something nice for $15. And I don't like to do toys. I get games (like board games) books, art stuff, things like that. My niece who is 15 now, I do things like make up or a gift card for a mani or something.

For Christmas we have a limit of $25 for family and if the kids get a friend something it is $15.

ETA: For our kids birthdays we spend $25 on a gift to open and their party is another gift (and expense). For Christmas we spend about $100 on the kids. But like someone else said, we don't buy our kids "things" throughout the year.

When it is one of my kids' friends b-days, it is usually like $10 - $15 we spend, birthdays for my brothers/sister is usually $30-$50, Christmas is usually anywhere from $25 - $50. Typically my mom and my dh's mom get a higher priced gift from us.
My kids - I never really paid attention to how much we spend on their bday gifts (will do that as my dd's birthday is in May).

20 dollars for Christmas and Birthdays. Lately I have been giving the teen neices and nephews a gift card because I have no idea what they like. I thought I found the perfect gift for my neice at Christmas, and she already had it.
Edited to add, if it is a present for one of my kids' friends it is only 10 dollars.
