I read an article recently in Money Sense Magazine about Billions of unclaimed dollars in US and Canadian banks. These are old forgotten about accounts, or unclaimed insurance or from lots of other sources. It's really worth looking into.

The ultimate treasure hunt

To go straight to looking if any of these unclaimed billions are yours look here:

In the US
Missing Money Free Search for Unclaimed Property - Officially endorsed By The States

In Canada
Bank of Canada - Banque du Canada

Unclaimed money from a bankruptcy in Canada
www.osb.bsf.ic.gc.ca

Hope one of us can find some lost dollars! I'm looking today.

They had a thing about this on the news several years back and I checked. Nothing for us though!

None for me either. I even checked for dh and all our brothers and sisters. Just for fun I did a search on our last name and found 124 matches. I was surprised at how high some of the unclaimed balances were!

We just got a check for this. BIL said he saw hubby's name and an old address on one site. It turned out to be some dividends on some old stock he had.

The banks have to turn it over to the state at some point. I dislike the state having something they don't desrve.

As an aside, some years ago, we got a letter from a company we didn't recognize that said they had some money that they thought was ours and all we had to do was give them the SSN. I wouldn't do it. Maybe it was legit, but I wasn't going to take a chance.

This time, all that was required was the last digits of the SSN and some indication that the old address was one we actually lived at.

I didn't find anything here, but about a year ago I found my name on my state's listing. Turned out to be a nice chunk of change!
