We spend around 5% and that also includes you health, beauty, pets, anything taxable.

You know, that's a good point. I don't know whether they are including non-food products in groceries or not when they give these statistics. I include those in "groceries", as well as diapers, etc. That would certainly make a big difference.

OK, with the rough percentages, I can't really do the exact math, but it looks as if we're beating the averages!

73% so far pay 0-10%, and 23% pay more in line with the national average of 11-15%. So despite the high percentage of SAHMs (=single income families) on the board, that smart grocery shopping really pays off.

We really are lucky, though. I keep seeing the reports on riots over rising grain prices in poorer countries, where it takes half a family's income to buy rice.

I guess that's something for us to keep in mind no matter how frustrated we get at rising grocery prices here.

Im up at 16% if we spend our max grocery budget. Though calculated it off of our take home income it goes to 14% of our annual. But we also do include lots of extra's in our food budget like diapers, pet food and toiletries

If I figured it out right (I used gross income) I spend about $250 a month or about 9.5% (I think) on groceries, pet food and HBA stuff.

I only make about $28,000 a year though.

we are at 6% of income. Wish we could spend more, but as our medical bills are in the neighborhood of 25% of our income, we just can't.

YEAH, there is NO way we could spend $950 on groceries. For one, I don't think we could EAT that much in one month, lol.

I'm from Ontario too. How do you do it. I feel successful when I can get it down to under $400 a month and our income is about the same as yours. I did find 'No Frills' recently which has helped but I have to drive to another city to get there which takes away from some of the savings.

It's only my boyfriend, me and our 2 cats. I mainly use coupons, watch sales, shop at Food Basics and Real Canadian Superstore. I stock up on what I can. I don't buy organic, because there isn't enough regulations insuring that what I'm paying for is different than non-organic. I'm not sure if you know about this site or not, but I find Save.ca - Your source for free grocery coupons. has good coupons, if you buy name brand.

My mom works in the HBA section of Wal-Mart, so she gets me clearance shampoo, conditioner and body wash. Then she never accepts anything from me for them. My boyfriend does buy $8 a bottle John Frieda blonde shampoo though. It makes his hair so nice though (seriously, not sarcastically). I only buy toilet paper on sale with a coupon.

My biggest trick is that we bike* so we can only buy as much as we can carry. This really helps all though impulse buys, because we can only get so much at once.

* I live in a small town with no public transportation and expensive cabs.

I wish we had a No Frills, but sadly no. The town I grew up in had a No Frills that was owned by my friends dad and step mom. It was new and nice and clean and cheap. It's where my family did our grocery shopping.

By the way, is your name Kathryn? That's my name, same spelling.
