Our 72 hour kits could stand a little work and it really would be a good idea to have some cash around the house. It feels better when you are prepared. We have 6-12 months of food stashed in our basement and it's nice to know that we have a backup no matter what happens. Even if it isn't a natural disaster, just my husband being laid off of work, or suddenly needing to buy a new car, we have a way to save money and stretch our budgets.

I know this sounds silly but in the south we never prepare for snow so everything was down for two weeks and some things longer than that. After a few days I promised myself that I would always be prepared for what ever comes and I have until this day. It has been 15 years since the storm and people think I am crazy but I bet they will think of me if anything of that sort ever happens again.
I remember that storm!! I was in 8th grade, I think. I lived in AL for a few years. We were out of school for a full 5 days, and the power went off for almost a week for us. Luckily we had a fireplace, gas grill and a lot of canned goods. Actually, now that I look back it wasn't luck at all. My parents insisted on getting a house with a basement and fireplace, we always had a lot of canned goods. I guess my parents were prepared. All I know is that we ended up hosting 2 other families for a few days because none of them had heat or a fireplace!!
