Here's a reason as to why scare people. Companies are all in the red for the most part. Rising costs for transportation, packaging material, health care and wages mean that companies have to do what they can to save a little, or,in many cases, get more profits. Notice your ice creamis no longer in a half gallon size? Boxes of crackers or cookies smaller? Can's that used to be 17oz of veggies now 14.5? Things shrink, to save those companies money. They need more but can't shrink things further because it might attract too muc attention? Have a big sale! Encourage people to buy lots, including things they don't need. Does that sound familiar? Those grocery stores don't run those great specials for nothing... same with holiday sales. How many people have the ability to just get the sale stuff? Most people don't.
But... what to do when they STILL need more money, but don't want to offer those great sales? Hype up the masses!! Rice shortage! Banana shortage!! I know!! Let's make the consumer think that every thing is going to have a shortage in addition to those things! Mass hysteria ensues. People rush out, buy, buy buy, and usually don't JUST buy what they NEED, but think I'd better buy this... just in case... and some of these... oh my gosh what if the price on this goes up even more?! Need some of that too!!!!!!
I'm not trying to be cynical, but think about it... ever otice when there's a hurricane or something stores are stripped of water, batteries, food, gas? If these people had supplies on hand, stores wouldn't have such a big jump in sales, and you can see, that many companies look forward to catistrophicevents happening, because then they can clear out their warehouses of stuff that's getting old because everyone's going to rush out and buy it, for just in case.
My thoughts are be smart. Buy what you need, have extra on hand, but don't let panic take over. You'll become so consumed with getting that extra can or bottle of whatever, when maybe that money could be, and should be, used differently.
