You gals are so right!
This topic really touches my heart. My father had to collect disability following severe brain damage resulting in uncontrollable and permanent epilepsy. It was heartwrenching watching him wither with shame because my mom and we kids needed to be taken care of (they were both in their 20s at the time). Even though he had served his country in Vietnam, and IMHO in doing so he earned every penny this government could ever offer, he didn't want anything in return but to be able to take care of his family himself.
I am grateful that my dad could get disability income, because my family could have been broken without it. But, every member of my family would have traded anything to just have our father healthy again. It was such an embarassment to him to know that his kids were being cared for by handouts (though he had absolutely nothing to be ashamed of).
I wish more people had such dignity and would realize that it is a privelege to work--to be a contributing part of this society! When it is really taken away, it eats at the soul.
An open hand requires a humble heart.

I think this is definitely an instance where your family deserved some assistance. It is different if you are truly unable to work. I'm sorry you had to go through that.

There are people that I truly believe need assistance. That's what the system was created for. I just get irked by people that take advantage of it b/c they don't feel like working...or people who, for whatever reason, feel they're entitled to the services just because they exist.

There was a video I used to show my classes called "The Blame Game". It was actually a 20/20 segment on how America has become a country that blames everyone else for their problems and no longer takes responsibility for their actions. Remember the lady that sued McDonalds b/c she spilled hot coffee on herself? There was actually a couple who was having sex on a train track and got hit by a train. They sued the train company b/c they didn't check the tracks. Now, most people would figure if you're lollygagging around on a train track there's a high probability you could get hit by a train. Anyway, it was interesting b/c they interviewed an immigrant from Jamiaca who said in his country to be on welfare was a shameful thing and he couldn't believe so many people here bragged about it. They also interviewed a man who said he'd rather be on welfare than work at McDonald's...and several alcholics and drug addicts who used their checks to support their habits...because addiction is a disability, ya know? It just really frustrates me...and I got off track again.

You are so right. Someone on tv was talking about the Dems being the "I want my mommy" party. It saddens me so that we started as such an ambitious country with incredible work ethics and now we expect the government to take care of us. I think it shows that if you give something to someone who is capable of earning it, they dont value it very much and just want more bc it came so easy rather than working for it. Big government and throwing money at problems doesnt solve long term social issues.
