We save and pay cash for all our home improvements. We usually do 1 big project and a few little one's throughout the year. This year we are fencing in our property, we've been saving for about 15 months, so I am really excited to get it installed! It is frustrating how much the cost of labor is! I wish we more handy with big projects and able to do them ourselves, but I am thankful DH doesn't mind painting, hanging window treatments, landscaping etc.

We did it in stages...we knew what we wanted to do, saved the $$ waited for a 0% interest period on some stuff, bought that and paid it off before the 0 interest expired, the rest was cash. It takes a long time to do it that way, but it was well worth it.

we go one project at a time we don't put it on credit cards either. however we did get a 2nd mortgage about 7 years ago and put on on new siding all new windows and a new roof. we then 4 years ago rolled both mortgages into one at a lower rate and were able to drop pmi since we had good equity in our home. otherwise we pay cash as we go.

we also do stuff in stages. DH does all of the work himself, so we use the Home Depot card which is always no payments for I think 1 year on purchases over $299- which it always is! LOL! I always pay it off before they tack on the interest.

We save and also use part of our tax refund. Every year we list all the things that NEED to be done. Then we make a "wish list" too. This year we put in a new driveway, walkway, and patio. Nothing too fancy and we got many, many estimates from various companies. We researched them through the Better Business Bureau and references. These 3 things had to be done because they were a hazard. DS constantly tripped on our old uneven patio and the driveway was cracked and part of it crumbled. However, that's it for home improvements for this year - nothing from the wish list will get done.
