Three years ago my DH was laid off out of the blue as his position as an accountant for a lumber distributor was eliminated. He never got a bad review in his life and didn't think the company was doing bad. (Basically they replaced him with a new college grad for about half the money they paid him -- they did the same thing with about four other people too.) Taught us a VERY valuable lesson -- be prepared.

I am self employed as an attorney and I do a lot of bankruptcy work. Unfortnately for my clients this down turn in the economy has helped my business.

Well I have to say my dh's job is pretty secure as he is getting a promotion that he's been working for a long time.

My dh is a truck driver. Right now he transports cars but if sales go down then it might be a problem. He is high up on the list of 200 drivers so he doesn't get laid off when times are slow. Luckily he can get a job in another driving company if needed.

There are a lot of people under him that would go first. Which is sad to be happy about but I am.
He already does his job and most of the job of the managers under him. He is also a very hard worker and never complains so I think that they will keep him as long as possible.

DH works for UPS so I think it's pretty stable and secure.

I'm sorry. I know it's not much but could there be a spinoff thread about ideas for when this happens?

I'm not at all worried about my husband's job security. He's Air Force. Because of his flying commitment we can't get out for another 7 years even if we want to.

The military does downsize and then need more people. We know several pilots who took a bonus to get out early (100k I *think*) and then a few years later the Air Force had the same bonus for getting back in, so they took that, too. They won't just get rid of you though in dh's career. He'd have to do something incredibly stupid (maybe a DUI would do the trick, I don't know) or have an illness that interfered with flying...even then it would be a long process.

My husband works for local government so it is hard to tell. A new mayor came in and gave him a raise but did restructure his department and laid off two people. Who knows what will happen when a new mayor comes in the future. I do find comfort in that we live comfortably on one income so if something did happen to my husbands job I can go back to work easily and make up for the loss. My degree is in high demand where I live so I'm not worried. I'm a social worker.
