For the big things...auto policy, homeowners, life insurance. Do you shop around? Or do you stick with what you know. Or maybe a friend highly reccomends someone so you automatically go with them.
About 2 months ago (I think I mentioned it in another post). DH and I decided to see where we could save some extra money so I started shopping Homeowners Ins and Auto Ins. I thought I found the lowest we could get for auot so I was all set to go with Company A. Then company B called about Homeowners and asked if she could run our Auto as well b/c she thought she could beat company A. WHat did I have to lose? So I let her. Turned out if we waited 3 weeks to sign up (but still before our old policy expired) she could beat Company A (and well surpass my existing coverage!). DH had a ticket and in 3 weeks it would fall off (it was 2 years old), and by signing up then I got a discount for getting the policy before my current one expired. PLUS if I went with them for both Home and Auto it was another discount.
By shopping around I saved us almost $800 a year between home and Auto Insurance. I learned it definitly does pay to "shop around".
