Yikes!! He was wondering why his card wouldn't go through at the gas station. Today he got a call from the bank saying that a fraudulent charge (in Hawaii!) went through on his debit card, so they canceled it. Now I'm paranoid about identity theft!! I guess there was a CC security breach at Hannaford (grocery store chain around here) and the guy I talked to on the phone said that could be how it got out. I don't think we even got any notice that his card was one of the ones on the list of compromised CC records!! I sure hope this doesn't go any farther!!

That stinks. When the news broke about the Hannafords info being compromised, our bank called us and issued us a new debit/credit card, asap and canceled our old one. I always pay by check at Hannafords, but dh only uses his debit.

Ugh, that sucks. That happened to us too, about a year and some ago. I don't use my debit as often anymore either. You can put an alert on any of the credit bureaus and it counts as good on the remaining two. They will put a halt to the preapproved letters for credit and they will have to contact you via phone if you wanna open credit anywhere. This is good for 6 months. Good luck

Sarah,

I have also worried about the Hannaford breach. I read the articles about it and it sounded like every debit card transaction during those couple of months was involved. We had used a card there 3 times in that period. I have never received anything from Hannaford or our bank regarding this. I was particularly stressed as I moved money into our checking account in preparation for the down payment on our construction/mortgage loan. Luckily, that went smoothly and we will be closing that account in the next couple of months. Not because of the Hannaford breach, but because our lender required direct deposit and auto payments in order to get a decent interest rate on the loan.

I haven't used a card again at Hannaford, but I know that every place is vulnerable to that kind of crime. We use cash now.

I don't even remember hearing about that breach. I probably didn't think about it because we rarely shop there. But I suppose it is possible that he went in there at some point to grab something really quickly. Or maybe that wasn't even the way his card number was stolen, I don't know.

In any case, I really, really prefer using my debit card for everything because I can always pay the exact amount and keep track of all of our expenditures for gas, groceries, etc, without having to shuffle receipts around. So now I don't know what I'm going to do. I've been hearing ads on the radio for identity theft protection agencies, and they are effective because they really freak me out. Now we do NOT have money to buy identity insurance, but this situation really makes us reconsider how we do things.

That stinks!!

My bank offers fraud protection and zero liability on unauthorized debit transaction. I need to use the debit card because it makes it so much easier for me to track my expenditures.
