This is exactly how I think about checks that are "in the mail". We overpaid on dd's delivery bills (we knew it was going to be a chunk of $$ b/c of the plan we were on but we switched plans right before she was born that made it cheaper, so in the end we paid in more than we ended up owing) and the dr's office has been saying, "we've mailed the check" ever since. She's 10 months old!!! And they knew about it before she was born!!! Dh has gone thru about 14 plans for that $300 that have never happened b/c it never came. That's why I never adjust my thinking from "that money doesn't even exist" to "that's my money" until the check amount shows up in my checking account!

In my experience, when you give up and stop looking for it, that's when it comes
For me I will plan before I get anything -- sort of like what I would do if I won the lottery -- but I don't actual commit or do anything until I have the money in my hands!!
My problem is sometimes I hold on to the money too long and wind up wasting it on small things and not realize it. (Past behavior which is hopefully is resolved with my new budgeting.)
