We'd stop dreaming about our RV trip across the country that's for sure! Right now gas doesn't bother me, b/c dh's job gives us milage $ that pays for his gas and they are thinking of getting company cars so that would be nice. But $10 a gallon would get my attention. I expect it to be $5 by this year.

I think that long before, gasoline reached the $10 point, companies would have cut back on company cars. Mileage reimbursements would go up but fewer and fewer people would be offered those benefits.

My husband already works from home 3 days a week. I expect within the next year that the group will have no office space at all.

I am amazed that things that were not considered feasible a few years ago, are getting serious consideration now. That is how progress occurs, when doing things the old way gets harder.

You were thinking what I was thinking. Lots of people use public transportation and do not have cars. It would make living in the downtown area even more attractive here. Lifestyles would change and lots of jobs would be lost. I am just thankful that my husband just took a job that is half the distance as his old job from home.

I got the feeling that it reitterated how everything is connected. But still like every ecconomic change we adapt. Maybe the rise in gas prices are a good thing. They are finally getting many people to conserve, to spend less and consider alternative power sources. My father who has never been concerned about this type of thing was talking about where to install solar panels.
I think its about time more people consider other options. Like carpooling and buses in general yes the high gas prices will mean some ecconomic hits but in the long run it could get us off our dependence on Fossil fuels so just maybe its a good thing.

This article was thought-provoking. We live in a fairly rural area. Dh must drive to work -- he can't work from home. I know we would be thinking twice about every trip anywhere. We were at a family birthday party this weekend, and I guess if gas was $10 a gallon, we wouldn't have gone.

Both dh and I work very close to our home, about 3 miles away. Dh could easily ride his bike to work. I only 2 shifts a week, but it's 3rd shift otherwise I'd bike to work too. It's the running around we do with and for the kids. They would feel the pinch pretty hard. It would put the kabosh on our summer travel plans. We love taking road trips. I'd probably have to pick up an extra shift or 2 at work just to help fund the gas. I was just asking dh the other day how high would gas have to go up before we'd change what we do and we both agreed that at around $6.50. Can you just imagine all the other things that would go up when gas reaches $6.50 or more a gallon?

I do believe it will hit $10, with the world population growing and demand growing in other countries, the US is no longer the main player we used to be. India and China are calling the economic shots now (this is supported by the Saudi's basically saying no to Bush's request last week). There was a documentary "We Were Warned" (I think that's what it was called) on Sunday...scary stuff. This all reminds me of a Mel Gibson movie I saw as a kid, Road Warrier/Mad Max...a futuristic movie that shows that gas is a rare commodity and people are killing each other for it and stealing it. Here in our hokey little suburb, there were 3 instances of people stealing gas in the police log....

I live in the UK so I already pay that much! I'm thinking of getting rid of my car. The problem is public transport is getting too expensive also. Basically I need to live within walking distance of work!

If everyone would get rid of the big gas guzzlers it would be a big help. I know life would be different but we would still have to buy some gas. We would also get in better shape because we would walk to as many places as we could.

I think people would have to resort to growing their own foods and vegetables, perhaps even keeping their own animals like chickens for food. I also think that less and less people would rely on the large grocery stores but go local for food, especially in rural areas. More people would probably hunt and fish in order to provide for their families.

I do wonder if gas starts creaping up if more and more people will decide drilling for oil in the US is a good idea and if there would be more of a demand for the relaxation of EPA standards on vehicles so they will be more fuel efficient (case in point the SMART car gets much better fuel mileage in Europe and Canada than it does in the US).
