My parents lived paycheck to paycheck. So did dh's. I watched my Mom struggle to pay bills and my father buy new vehicles without even consulting her. That would NEVER happen with dh and I.

We vowed we would never, ever live that way if at all possible. We educated ourselves and my wonderful bil was a great help. We are pretty frugal and live simply.

My parents were very thrifty with their money. My mom clipped coupons, shopped at garage sales, and bought things off the clearance rack. I guess I know where I get it from!

My mom is horrilble with money, I am getting better. I think the way you are taught or not is hard to unlearn but thankfully I am. My mother called this week complaining about overdraft fees and not being able to afford groceries, then went and paid over 2000 for another dog. She now has 7!! I don't know what to do, I'm finally in a place where we are building EF and not living paycheck to paycheck, I don't want to feel guilty for not bailing her out. Thanks for letting me vent.

My Mom was very good with keeping everything balenced. But yes I fall into her spending pattern of spending money on the kids and very little on myself. She shopped at Nordstrums and an upscale botique for our clothes while she went without. So I see me doing the same thing in that I buy my DD stuff all the time when I despertly need new underware or a few new out fits.
I know there were some tight times but my parents never let on that they were tight on money. We were always provided for. Where my parents were ahead is that they had saved for tough times. They had 11 years before kids, They lived in there first home 19 years, They didn't buy new cars, Theyt haven't gone on any big vacations, they saved for retirement. Overall they were good role models though I feel I am more frugal because I have to be.
