Are some people just born frugal? My dd seems to have the frugal gene while it seems to have skipped ds.

Or how about people who are in school for decades like my dh! He has done 11 years of post secondary education so far with 2 more to go! We've been living frugally the whole time we've been married. But 10 years from now when he has a nice stable job, the kids are in university, and I'm working full time will I still be 'little miss frugal'?

My best friend came from a very frugal background. Now she has a fantastic job and she's single and it's still really hard for her to spend money.

Once frugal, always frugal?

What's your experience?

i was raised frugal and i am teaching the kids to be( dh was raised frugal too). i hate having to buy anything new. dh wanted me to go buy something new for myself to wear and i just could not do it( went to value village and looked and still could not buy anything! piggybanked it instead). i shall be hopelessly frugal to the day i die.

I know plenty of people who have gotten over being frugal very quickly post grad school. It's easy to do once your income goes up, to forget all those lessons you've learned and start splurging a little that becomes too much.

It really depends on the person.

Honestly we go threw periods. We had about a year and a half of being DINKs (Double income no Kids) It was nice to have the ablity to be able to easily save $1000 a month and still get to do things like eat out twice a week. Of course we spent it all on our house, had a baby, had one thing after another come up and now have more debt then we would like and thus are frugal again. We have no problem being frugal provided we have strong goals to modivate us. As newly weds we wanted a house and were able to save up enough on just one income by making frugal choices. Now I am wanting to continue being a SAHM so a strong reason to continue being frugal. I don't think I will ever be a no discount shopper

I think it has something to do with how we are as a person and what our personalities are - some people are hardwired to be impulsive, others to be cautious, and I think if you put compare that to how people spend there would definitely be some connections.
