This is hypothetical of course. BUT, say you worked with a family member. They were your boss. Times have been tough in the industry and not much money flow. But, you are their secretary. Their only employee. You balance the check book and enter all information into an accounting software. Today is pay day. Your boss tells you that they are not able to pay you. They can only pay you $250.00 of your $800.00 check.

However, your boss's spouse has spent over $700.00 at a retail store in the last 2 days. You know this because you updated the accounting software this morning. What would you do?

I don't know. That would stink big time. I'd probably confront but feel guilty about it. I'd rather work for a stranger so I could be meaner about it, take further action, and not feel guilty.....

I would say ...

"No ...no ...no... It appears you're check will be $550 less this month. Not mine. You own the place. I just work here. I worked my hours. If finances are down it doesn't mean I've suddenly become a volunteer."

That is such an EXCELLENT answer! I always WANNA be like that with folks, but I'm never 'confident/brave' whatever enough!

Exactly! If you're the boss then you pay all the bills and all the employees and if there's enough left over to pay yourself, then great. If not, oh well.

I own my own business and I would NEVER pay myself before my employees. My business is MY risk not theirs -- similarly if the business had a great year I would expect to pay myself a larger bonus than what I give to the employees.

If they can pay for shopping trips that aren't necessary -- they can pay your salary. I would say something.
