Free wood!!! That is AMAZING!! We are paying about $1000 for our wood this year, and plan to heat almost exclusively with the woodstove, though we do have oil heat and hot water, which is ridiculous now. I don't even want to know. We have started shutting off the burner at night and when we are both gone for the day so it doesn't keep kicking on to have hot water ready. If we were to heat exclusively with oil this winter (of course, winter in NH is October-April!), I'm guessing it would cost us at least $3000. Maybe closer to $4000 or more if prices keep skyrocketing. We have less than 1/8 of a tank right now, not sure where we're going to get the money to fill it up.

Electricity: $75-$125, depending on the season, though I expect that will go up.
Internet: $62
2 Cell phones (no landline): $67
Water--we have a well, so it just is the cost of electricity for the well pump.
Sewer--we have septic, but it just cost us $225 to pump the tank (first time in 3 years that we've had it done)
Garbage--we have to haul it to the dump ourselves.
Cable--nope, no tv at all.

I really don't feel so bad about my utilities now. We live in a 1000 sq ft apartment that is NOT insulated well. We only pay electric. In Feb. we had our highest bill at $160 and the bill I just got in this week was for $100. Trash and water are included in our rent. Don't ask how much I pay for rent....

I forgot these:
Cable and Internet-$63
Cell Phones-family plan (no landline)-$90
Car Insurance- I budget $86 a month for auto insurance-we pay it every 6 months

We live in Massachusetts too, and it must be the state. I posted earlier in this thread about our costs and it seems like they were way out of line with most others. We do have a big old house, but we have a new boiler and windows. Our gas bill alone on a budget is $230/month and electric is close to that.

Thank you all for making me feel normal! I would always read budget articles and see things that say 'your utilities should only be xx% of your income'. My thought was always 'why are my utilites so high?' so it's nice to see it's not just me.

Ok, here goes:

Gas: $130/month budget (still paying for the high-efficency furnace and new windows we put in - but it has helped)
Electric: $90/ month budget
Phone/Internet: $70/month
Cell Phone: $60/month
Water: $80/quarter so let's round to 30/month
Cable: $10/month don't need anything more than a few basic channels

so that's $380/month

Would love to get that down but don't know how. When the house gets down to 62 we turn on the furnace - normally keep it at 68. When it gets to 82 we turn the air on - normally keep at 78 in summer.

I don't even want to talk about insurance costs...

I am really not that surprised by the differences. It would depend on how many people are in your home, how big your home is, and where you live.

I live in the Atlanta Area, so its usually not too cold too long and it gets pretty darn hot during the summer.

Electricity goes from $60 in the winter to $300 in the summer (running the AC)
Gas goes from $200 in the winter to $20 in the summer (only use it for hot water)
Water/Sewer average about $35 a month (I have low flow EVERYTHING)
Garbage is $60 a quarter (including fuel surcharges)
Cable/Internet: $118 a month
Phone: $50 a month

My cell phone is provided by my firm, and I am about to be reimbursed for my internet for $40 a month!!

I am going to try and get a hold on the utilities by spending more time in our basement which is cool in the summer anyway.

We get billed for everything but our garbage pick-up, which is included in our nearly $10,000 property taxes .

Other than that, we have:

Oil - was $285/month this year, not sure for the coming year b/c we're putting in a pellet stove (oil is being capped at about $4.99 a gallon this year).

Electricty - is $109 in the lowest months and up to $400 a month in the summer (CT has the highest electrical rates in the continental US)

We also have phone/internet/cable and cell phone.

Water (city) - about $100 quarterly

Sewer (city) - about $100 quarterly

Security system (a must where we live) $73.00 quarterly.

electric-$130-180/mo
water/sewer-$90+/mo(paid 3x/yr)
phone/cable/internet-$120/mo
oil/propane-around $2800 this winter (paid as needed)
trash-$35/mo

It's the oil and propane that is so expensive. I hate to see what it will be next year!!!
