So, we changed banks to Chase for a few reasons. The best being we got $$ for opening a new account and needed to change banks anyways since our old bank did not have handy atms for us. So, we closed the 53 account.

I forgot to change 1 automatic withdrawl from this account. This withdrawl came through over 10 days after we closed the account - the bank allowed it to come through. The balance was zero since the account was closed - and now we are overdraft close to $200 (it took 5 days to get the letter to me and they charge daily when you are negative).

HOW CAN THEY DO THIS? My husband is on the phone with them now (for the last hour) and they say we are responsible still. HOW - we closed the account - why didn't they just deny the payment?

Anyways, I hope this makes sense - I am almost to made to type. I am so frustrated about bills and this does not help me right now!

Looks to me like it would have been denied, due to close account. So if the bank let it come thru and paid it, that is their fault. I know you have to pay the bank but they should waive all but one penatly fee.

I would ask to speak to the manager and go as high up the chain of command as it takes to get this fixed.

I am happy to pay the bill that came through but don't feel we should have any fees (one would only be $33 so I probably wouldn't argue). I assumed that a closed account was closed. It was not as if I had written a check that came through afterwards. UGH! Beware to everyone else.

Well the local branch may be able to fix this for us (THANKS to GOD!). We will know Monday. I did not want to tarnish 53 reputation for anyone. However, the people at the 1-800 number were NO help at all!

53 as in Fifth 3rd National? The reason I ask is we are currently First Charter and they are merging this weekend...as of June 9, we will be Fifth 3rd, and we were going to see how they are before we make a move (All of our info transfer seems easy enough, but you just never know).....your case in point.

Well, Chase has been a pain in my butt. I changed to them for a bonus too. One problem was my refund check was put on hold. OK, I get it, the girl told me it probably wouldn't be on hold that long, and when I stopped in one day to ask if the hold was off, she told me yes it was, I wrote a check, and it bounced. I have had other problems with them, but I imagine I am going to have the same problems no matter where I go, so I just make sure if I need the money anytime soon, I cash it at Walmart, or go to that persons bank.

We actually had a similar situation but with Chase. My husband closed his checking acct. and then a few days later there was a withdrawal for an automatic insurance bill (which we were able to fix through that company so we did not owe them any extra for INF- Progressive was a dream to work with in dealing with this)... we didn't find out until over a week and half later- the letter wasn't dated until a week later. They have now said we owe them over $900 for a $53 overdraft, even though the acct was closed. My husband talked to the bank and they were really snotty about it and said that they charge by the day, etc. He went to the managers, and up the ladder until they did agree to only charge us for the 2 days that it should have taken them to send the letter or to email us. We had that set up where they were supposed to text when the account was low or something was coming through that would not go through. So we paid them like $150 for their mistake. We have since gotten several letters saying we owe them over $900. This occured back in Nov. My husband has been fighting it and they sent it to collections. It is just one big mess. I know some people like them, but personally I HATE CHASE! We are now with 53 (Fifth Third) and have had absolutely NO PROBLEMS! THey have been absolutely wonderful with us.

DH and I have been with 53 since November of last year and we have not had one problem with them. They have been extremely friendly and helpful anytime we have had a question or concern about our acct.
