I feel more secure knowing we have benefits available should anything happen to one of us. Right now, we are very fortunate that only myself wears glasses and I'm the only one who has a prescription to fill every month.
We go to the dentist every 6 months since our insurance covers that. We see the eye doctor every year since the insurance covers that also.
Benefits are very important for us, especially with 4 children. It is very cost effective for us pay relatively small premiums for dental, vision, health insurance and have all 6 of us covered. I figure that we are saving at least $2,000 per year with the vision and dental plans alone (my daugher and I both wear glasses/contacts).
Benefits are extremely important. I have never had vision(well, eye exams are covered under our health, but not glasses) but health, prescriptions and dental is vital with a family the size of ours!!!
Benefits are VERY important to us esp medical and prescription. DH had a kidney transplant 3yrs ago. As long as he doesn't have a lapse in having insurance, he cannot be denied or have a waiting period due to pre-existing condition. The copay for DH's meds is about $100 combined. If we didn't have insurance, one of his medications alone costs about $1000/month!
Extremely important. DH and I both have these things covered through our work. I am thinking of dropping some of mine though as now that I am only teaching part time dental coverage will cost me $45-50/month. While mine are better (my plan pays the entire dental bill, his only 80%) I think we might be better off just using his. As for the drugs, even though I will have to pay $50-60/month, with the prescriptions we have it is worth it.
This round of negotiations we are trying to get full benefits for part time teachers. Hopefully this will happen!
Dental insurance is definitely important to me. Vision insurance was a waste of money for us because I'm the only one in the family who needs glasses to see. Prescriptions come with the health insurance.
I think that having children, along with aging causes benefits to be much more important. I could have cared less in my 20s, but now....I'd hate to imagine it.

I consider vision/dental/Rx coverage part of health insurance. If I didn't have those, I would say I have LOUSY health insurance. DH and I both wear glasses. He's had to have cataract surgery already. Dental is necessary and expensive. I got invisalign a couple years back to correct shifting teeth too. And we both have a ton of Rx even though we're healthy and in our 40's. These things are just part of health insurance to me, not sure why you consider it something different. They are necessary and extremely important, and a major reason why I've stayed at my job for 18 years even though at times I've hated it and cried every Sunday about having to return.
