You fill the jars and put the lids on. Put the jars in the strainer but dont it in the pot until you have the water boiling. Make sure the jars are completely covered with boiling water when you lower the strainer into the pot. Different things have different boil tims, but applebutter is 20 minutes.

Dont feel bad about asking- I started doing all this canning stuff last summer while I was pregnant and going thru my nesting phase- I swear I was on the phone with my grandma at least twice a day with questions. This went on for close to a month! Now- she asks me for some recipes too.

don't you have to sterilize the jars/lids first in boiling water though? or do you just wash them up well and let them dry completely before filling/processing them?

Yes- I always do this but I always forget to add it in when I'm telling someone else how to do it. Thanks for mentioning that! Its like second nature for me, so I forget about it when I'm explaining it.

Try going to www.homecanning.ca

I was a virgin canner and didn't want to ask my Mom for help, since she will be the recipient of some of the goodies.

I made caramel apple butter and followed the step by step instructions in the website above for the boiling method. I processed for about 12 minutes and once out of the water, they sealed almost immediately. All 9 jars that I did turned out the first time~

Good luck!

I use pint jars if I'm doing something for gifts. Either Kerr, Ball or Golden Harvest. Golden Harvest is my jar of choice since its the lowest priced around here- they're 6.xx at Walmart- the others run about 8.xx and up. I really cant tell a difference in the brands other than the price. There are some that have a once piece lid too- I just prefer the look of the two piece lid for gift giving- dont really know why.
