I think prices are going up for products/groceries in response to fuel costs. My husband works for a large transportation company--they pass the extra fuel costs on to the product companies/stores, who in turn pass the costs on to us--nice huh? Unfortunately, the Owner Operators and small transportation companies are getting run over in the process--it would be like the neighborhood hamburger stand trying to stay afloat alongside McDonald's if the city doubled their property taxes.
As far as the smaller sizes go, the company responses I've heard annoy me too--wish they would just tell it like it is: they're offering smaller portions at higher prices to save a buck and were hoping nobody would notice.
