I was shopping with my mom at TJ Maxx once and she paid for the one item I bought (it was senior day) and I paid her back. I never thought twice about it... so I guess I think it's OK. It wasn't a big enough discount (I think it was 10%?) to have me go out of my way to drag my mom to the store if she weren't there already.

I have done this with my mother and my MIL. We have gone shopping to Khols and my Mom had a 15% off coupon plus it was senior day so she got another 10% I think. I picked up a few items for the kids on clearance. She paid and I gave her what I thought was a fair amount for the stuff. She then hands me back $10 because she said I gave her too much. So then I said keep it because I bought you something too!!

I don't think its unethical at all. I didn't lie about my age. I buy my Mom stuff all the time and she buys me stuff too. Its just the way we do stuff and I always offer to pay her back and she usually refuses so that is why I buy her stuff.

I didn't mean you as in YOU, but as in anyone in general. I guess I should have added that in the case of a senior discount and a parent, I don't think it's really that big of a deal, lol.

Not unethical at all.

I used to be the office manager in a department store. Customers did this a lot. Management was OK with it. A sale is a sale!

Oh don't worry, I wasn't offended. I just wanted to know where people thought the line was.

This was what I was thinking. I'm a rule follower .. just one of those things about me. If there was fine print that said the purchases should only be for the senior, I would never do it but it sounds like way they are trying to get seniors into the store .. even if they bring their grown kids with them.

I think it is unethical in the strictest point of law, but I do it!

Sure. But I don't consider 20% off a sale.

I'm going to be the bad guy. (ducking) I think it is absolutely fine if your parent is paying for the item to be given to you as a gift. I think it crosses the ethics line if they purchase it with the discount and you pay them back. If that is what the stores had intended, they would have advertised 10% off to everyone on that day. Stores do this specifically for seniors who are often living on fixed incomes. Sorry. I hate being the bad guy.

What is the age for senior day? I don't think my mom is old enough yet...
