If your favorite store was having a senior's day at a 20% discount for any senior, would it be ethical to take your mother to buy things you wanted so you could get the discount?

Funny you ask, MIL OFFERS to do this all the time. She buys them on "old lady day" as she calls it, and its a HUGE help.

I don't think its unethical, essp if she is offering. Plus all the stuff she buys is ussually stuff for the kids, she pays for out of her pocket anyhow.

I think it is fine! It is meant to be a discount for whatever the senior buys.

My Mom does it all the time (Missy, she calls it "old Lady Day" too ) ,but whenever she uses it, she is buying it (ie, paying with her own money), so I don't see anything wrong with it.

I don't ask to use her discount if I am somewhere with her and they have a senior discount (9 times out of 10 she will just buy it for me instead) does that make sense?

My mom gets mad about senior discount day. She says it makes her feel old. We've never done it but I admit there have been times I've thought about it with the fabric store. We just never think of it.

Now what about using your friend's out-of-state I.D. so you can get free sales tax? I've seen that one before. Or at least an attempt. I was annoyed but maybe because I was the cashier dealing with it at the time.

I don't think it's unethical unless you are having your mom do the shopping and the money is coming out of your pocket. I think it is similar to letting a friend/family member use your employee discount. When I worked at walmart, my dad asked me a couple times to buy something for him and I always paid for it separately without using my discount just because I didn't want him to make a habit of it.

I think it is fine. It is a great way for mom to get out of the house and spend a little time with you. If, however, you're dragging your barely aware mother out of the nursing home when she can't comfortably sit in the wheelchair and would clearly rather be elsewhere, perhaps it is becoming a bit abusive.

I haven't actually done it but my Mom offered to take me, she'd pay and then I'd write her a check. So in reality she would be doing the shopping but it would be coming out of my pocket. Does that then cross the ethical line?

That hit a funny bone! No, my mother is perfectly fine, saw the discount, offered to take me and I've been wondering if it's ethical.

I think it's fine...this is an isolated situation and it's nice of your Mom to offer. My MIL offers when we are visiting to go to Kohl's with her for the senior discount, I've never needed anything, but it's nice for her to think of us.

I think it would be different if you were going every week and always expected your Mom to go with you for the discount to different stores. That would be unethical because it is taking advantage. This is an out of the ordinary deal, so I think it's okay

I don't have an issue with it at all! The mark ups in most stores are so high they are still making a profit at "old lady day" I have done it before and will do it again...
as for the out of state ID...I live in WI and used to live in MN so it kills me to pay sales tax on clothes...I never thought to try that trick! =) funny! I wouldn't use another's ID (haven't done that since college!) but I would consider having my items shipped to a friends home in MN to avoid sales tax.
