My best advice is to pay all of your bills on time or even ahead of time and clear up any old debt.

Pay your bills on time, period. Being late is not an option.

Pay your bills on time is #1.

Keep your credit cards (if you have any) to 30% or below of your available credit.

Check your credit report at least once a year (it's free!) and dispute any errors.
