with all the middle class talk. do u actually fit where the statistics are. Don't forget that where you live also plays a part of this and may not be reflected in these numbers. If you find different numbers please post.

here's is the poverty line:

2008 Federal Poverty Guidelines
2008 HHS Poverty Guidelines
Persons
in Family 48 states alaska hawaii
1 $10,400 $13,000 $11,960
2 14,000 17,500 16,100
3 17,600 22,000 20,240
4 21,200 26,500 24,380
5 24,800 31,000 28,520
6 28,400 35,500 32,660
7 32,000 40,000 36,800
8 35,600 44,500 40,940
For each additional
person, add 3,600 4,500 4,140

Here's what I found for middle class:
As for middle class, well, the Congressional Research Service issued a report last year pegging middle class income as between $19,000 a year and $91,000 a year.

Upper middle class:
Household incomes commonly may exceed $100,000, with some smaller one-income earners earning incomes in the high 5-figure range.
Typical professions for this class include professors, accountants, architects, urban planners, engineers, economists, pharmacists, political scientists, physicians and lawyers.

Interesting. So are you upper middle class if you are above 100,000, or is there a new category for that?

I wanted my reply to be on a diffrent post.

according to this we should be upper middle class. however we make middle class money. This is due to dh being laid off and having to take a lower salary. dh's pay is lower than industry standard for his years of working but we have better benefits than most of his counterparts. Not sure what difference that makes. I'm sure more than we realize.

The way I read it the starting base is around 100,000. so you can be higher. the next catrgory was upper class and then rich. I didn't look at those numbers.

upper class:
In the United States the upper class, also referred to simply as the rich, is estimated to constitute less than 1% of the population. It consists of those with great influence and wealth. The main distinguishing feature of the American upper class is its ability to derive enormous incomes from wealth rather than work.
While most sociologists define the upper class as the wealthiest 1%, sociologist Leonard Beeghley classifies all households with a net worth of $1 million or more as "rich."

I guess I thought there was a line here with an upper and rich??

We are upper middle class then. If I was working full-time my salary would be tripled, and we'd be in a whole different class. Fortunately I am able to work part-time from home, so while my salary is lower, I do not have any daycare costs. I think we're better off this way. Not sure about my sanity though!!!

I can't wait til the day my money is making me more than I make working. I can smell the ocean breeze and the sand in my toes. Time to wake up now though and get back to work!

We are in the middle class range then. I wonder if we were considered middle class. DH makes less than 50K and we are a family of 3. I guess we are lower middle class. Ha!

from what I was reading the middle class is the hardest to define. the range is so big. we live in a fairly good state as far as cost of living.

I always thought we were middle class. I FELT middle class. When I started actually learning about the economy, I realize we are below the poverty line. Thanks to everything I have learned at Mommysavers, we don't have to live in poverty, though!
