We are not concerned at all- dh works at the electric company in customer service. it would have to be a total melt down= the end of the world kind of meltdown where we shut down all electricity in the whole country, before he would lose his job.

I don't worry about him losing his job, but I do worry that he is not happy. He is working like a dog and morale is low in his company right now. He took this job about a year and a half ago and it hasn't been what he was promised. NO bonus this year which was a shock (he normally gets very substantial bonuses). He won't get laid off but he is working too hard and he is way too stressed. They have a ton of work but they aren't hiring anyone new, so they really don't have enough people to do what needs to be done. So he keeps plugging away but it is always "putting out fires" which is a stressful way to live.

[quote=Lancelotacres;813338]I am beginning to worry about DH's job. Right now he's working over 40 hours per week, but his company doesn't have any new work (yet) after the new year. They have the current jobs, but no NEW ones. DH works mostly commercial...new school additions, additions to businesses, etc. People just aren't spending the money right now, so the jobs just aren't there. Things could change before the new year, but right now, we are concerned.
Having said that, DH has several qualifications in other fields of employment, so he should be able to find a job SOMEWHERE, QUOTE]
The first paragraph is us totally, except my husband does mostly residential work, and definetly no one is spending on that right now. This is the only field my husband knows.

DH has 2 jobs. He sells medical equipment and is paid primarily through the govt. b/c he works with geriatrics. If the economy gets way out of whack, the govt. will stop paying. His other job is a firefighter and they are one of the last civil servants to be "downsized" in a really bad economy. However, it could happen. I wouldn't say we are "worried". We are definitely even more cautious with our spending these days though.

To be honest... i am not worried about Dh's job. Although, i know that seniority doesnt account for much in the times we are in....he has been there over 4 years.... has a good position....and with fiber optics and big corporations... (everything runs with fiber....) i dont think he is going anywhere...... *knock on wood*
mine...hmm.... i am a fine dining waitress at a gated community country club..... and, though my job is not nearly as important as his.... our members seem to be doing well in this economy... go fgure.

I wanted to add my comments. My dh has worked in his industry for over 25 years...and I still worry a bit. Even with all that seniority...they still "move" people with under 20 years or so. Nothing is really secure. A lot of posts refer to how secure the company or job is (electricity, etc.)..the problem is not with the industry, but rather if companies merge or get bought out. Then people get laid off or shuffled around to reduce costs. Merges are big. I don't think many of the people that have been getting laid off recently were worried. My point is, I don't worry daily, but it's in the back of my mind that really, nothing is secure. You should just be aware, that's all.

All the time!! I think that is what originally made me find this site and try to cut back. We are in FL and things are pretty dreary around here. My husband is self employed and does granite. Things have definitely slowed there. I am working at a mortgage office and things have slowed down here as well. I try not to worry as much and just pray a lot!

I do worry about dh's current job since the last company went under. I am not worried about he field he is in because he can always find a job somewhere else but with less pay.

I'm more worried about DH's job than my own. His job is seasonal so it could really have some ups and downs. I'm currently pregnant, so i'm not in the position to work anymore than I already am (I already work full-time). I just hope we can hang on until he gets his license. Things should be a lot better then.

This is what happened to me. I had the same job for 7 years. When a new company bought us, they got new people and let the old ones go (me ).
Of course worrying never really helps. Unless you get a new job before you get laid off or have an emergency fund set up.
