Hi, we're going to Arizona the first week in July. I have the Grand Canyon booked, but any other tips/places to see anyone recommends? We're flying into Phoenix...but we have a week not yet planned so we're open. Of course, we're not there the week of free National Park days, but that's ok. Any info would be appreciated...Thanks!

Monument Valley. You can arrange for a private guided tour. It's in NE Arizona, part of the reservation. Stunning. We also enjoyed Sedona for a typical tourist town, but just outside there up on a mountain is a little town called Jerome that is an artist's community w/ lots of nice galleries. We liked that better than Sedona.

We lived in Phoenix for 5 years. If you're going to the Grand Canyon, you can take a trip over to Flagstaff. It is in the mountains, and somewhat cooler than the Phoenix area that time of year (July's average high for Flagstaff is 82, and it is 107 for Phoenix). We liked to go hiking there, and they have a nice downtown area too. We took a drive from Flagstaff once to the Walnut Canyon National Monument (Walnut Canyon National Monument (U.S. National Park Service)) to look at the cliff dwellings there. If you like scenic drives, look into getting from Flagstaff to Phoenix on AZ-260/AZ-87/Beeline Highway which goes through Pine & Payson. It is a much more scenic route than I-17 (but does take longer). We never made it down to Tombstone, but DH always wanted to go there. There is a lot of stuff to do in the Phoenix area. There are lots of resorts with great pools, great shopping, and lots of good places to eat. There are also some really nice museums there, like the Heard Museum (Native American exhibits, Heard Museum: World Famous for a Reason), Hall of Flame Fire Museum (history of fire fighting, Hall of Flame Fire Museum;fire history;firefighting history;fire apparatus;firefighting hall of heroes;phoenix attractions;phoenix museums;arizona attractions;fire museums;firefighting museums;firefighter line of duty deaths:), AZ Science Center (ARIZONA SCIENCE CENTER), and more (just Google Phoenix museums). Phoenix also has a nice zoo and botanical garden if you feel like braving the heat. Hope this helps.

We like Sedona and looking for the different rock sculpture/formations as well as Flagstaff and the Grand Canyon.
