We have a friend that throws a big holiday party for all the friends. This year she has asked for it to be a potluck with I think is a great idea saves her tons of money this way and still fun for all.

If you host holiday celebrations how do you keep the cost down?

Lots of planning and buying supplies as it goes on sale. Use coupons, of course. Buy generic when you can. When I have get togethers, they usually cost me as least $200. But because I spread it out over a minimum of three months, it isnt too bad on the pocket book.
Also keep your food simple.

We have a big one each year and it was discussed as a group that we would do BYOB...soooo I'll still be doing all the food, wine punch and crafts for the kiddies but removing the majoprity of the alcohol will make a big dif.

Oh yes, we always have one. I think we'll be trying to cut back this year both on the number of guests invited and on the extravagant foods. With the economy this year, I think everyone will understand, and people are starting to go back to basics overall, so I don't think it will make a huge difference.

And like a previous poster said, I'll use coupons, shop sales, and accept offers of people bringing items. I don't think anyone has ever shown up to our parties empty handed anyway. Wine/alcohol is a popular gift and always welcome.

Usually it will be potluck but I will prep the appetizers ahead of time, some can be frozen then warmed up and set out as needed.
