My husband and I like to letterbox. When we go camping, we usually pick a state park that has one or two and look for those. Last summer we actually planted our own boxes and people have been finding them! It is fun and it gets you outside on a trail together - relaxing fun! It's like a treasure hunt with clues and the reward is seeing some of the cool stamps people HAND CARVE! Also try Atlas Quest: International Letterboxing

I do not go out on my own and Geo cash. I am in a search and rescue group and we play similar games with our GPS. It is a lot of fun. If you check out the Geo cashing sites you would be surprised at how many are near your home. I know we have 3 along the green belt that I walk along. I see people looking for them every once and awhile. I will probably go cashing more when my toddler is older. Bet she would find it fun.

Wow!! I just went to this website: Letterboxing North America and looked up letterboxes in my area. There are THREE within 10 miles of my town!! One is just across town, at a park!!

I've never heard of letterboxing or geocaching before now, but with dh being a GPS fiend, I'll be sure to mention this to him!! Thanks for the heads up!!

Dh was really into geocashing...but ds was still pretty small (3) and it seemed forever to find those things!! I think I like the idea of letterboxing much better!!

I've often thought about starting it back up again now that ds is older, but I'm going to look into letterboxing this time around!

We are very involved in Letterboxing. What I would like to stress is that it requires a lot of stealth, respect and fun!

Many people hear about boxing, get some clues and run out and grab boxes. They end up leaving the boxes exposed (kids have been seen literally tossing the box back TOWARDS it's hiding spot), log books ruined and nature trampled.

Of course the majority of boxers are responsible and careful.

Before going in search of a box learn as much about boxing as you can, please read through the "rules"
About Letterboxing
including the Code of Conduct
Letterboxing Code of Conduct

And there are yahoo groups for boxing. One is called newboxers and can be very helpful in getting started. Additionally there are many local online groups so you can chat with other boxers in your area.

Letterboxing has provided my family with hours and hours and hours of fun, exercise, and togetherness. We have met wonderful people via this "hobby".

I am a huge geocaching fan, so I will put in a good word for that. As was said about letter boxing, it is important that you keep your activity secret from "geomuggles" (I love the Harry Potter reference). Last spring, my husband and I went up to see the tulips and found 11 geocaches that day. I can't wait to get started again! Geocaching is fun because you sometimes find geocoins or travel bugs which you can log online and then move to a new cache. Their owners are watching their progress across the country. It is so fun to be a small part of moving these little things around. I highly recommend geocaching!
