We buy dvds - we don't watch tv, except news, so movies/series on dvd are our entertainment. We usually watch one movie on a weekend and one episode of a series each night with dinner. We don't rent, because when we own movies, we can watch whatever fits our mood any time of day and we don't spend time or gas making trips/returns to the video store. Also, with watching series, we couldn't watch a whole season of anything within the 5-day rental period, and we don't copy anything.

We've been buying used for years. The best places are usually just plain used cd/dvd stores. Big cities and college towns have the best stores and many stores offer credits for each purchase: ex: earn 1 dollar to spend for each title purchased.

Second best is Hollywood Video previously-viewed dvds. We just bought 4 new-releases for $30 - each title at the store is $20, so we saved $50.

We do buy movies but only after we borrowed them and made sure they were worth the money. We only buy every couple of months and never at full price unless dh wanted it for a gift and it couldn't be helped. There are some bad ones out there. People think we are weird but we don't keep anything that has a ton of swears in it, sex scenes, or nudity. We don't even keep them if there are girls walking around in bikinis or bra and underwear. My hubby says thet there is enough of that junk outside the home that our kids will have to deal with and he dosn't want us to have it in our home and I totally agree. My parents think that we live a sheltered life but in truth we just want to keep it good and happy and keep out as much naughty stuff as we can.

I hate buying movies when the library is free. Whenever a new movie comes out on dvd I put my name on the waiting list at the library. It make take a while before I get it but it's worth not spending the money. Every now and then I will buy a dvd if it's something really special. I'm also not one to watch a movie more than one time.

I think they are a waste of money. The only ones we have bought are the disney collectible versions for the kids like Pocahontas, Beauty and the Beast, etc the classics, not those new crappy ones they are making these days. Cars was the last one we bought, it's the only recent Disney movie I let them watch. As for adult movies, we don't watch them enough for my cheap self to buy. We do have Blockbuster online though for my dh, but now with fall shows about to start I'm going to cancel it, he won't have time to watch movies like in the summer.

It reminds me of David Bach's latte factor and how much $20 a month or more can add up in an investment account.

I don't think it is weird. I have been thinking about that more and more lately. I have been trying to watch movies that I can have the toddler see. Or at least the 11 year old.
And back to the topic, I think haveing a subscription to Netflix or Blockbuster is better than buying movies. Even if you only bought one movie a week. Depending on the site, you can get unlimited movies 3 at a time for 17.99 a month. I went with the 9.99 plan at netflix, I think a dollar cheaper at blockbuster( I tried them too) for one at a time. We would watch the movie and immediately send it back most of the time. So we would get 2 movies a week, as long as I put it right back in the mailbox.

I never buy dvd's. Maybe occasionaly 1 for my daughter. I work at the library so I can usually see new releases when they come out. Saves a lot of money for movies I'll not watch more than once.

My husband and I talked it over, and we decided to join Columbia House. I'm actually glad we did. As a member, they offer sales for DVD's for $5. We don't feel so bad buying a cheap DVD, since we know that a babysitter, popcorn, tickets are a lot more than that. We decided that once the kids are in bed, we can snuggle up on our own comfy couch and watch the movie. Usually I'll order the movie, and I'll put it above the TV in anticipation of our next "date". We watch it when our schedule allows.

What we have been doing alot is PPV. Then we TIVO it and save it and my son can watch it any time. We used to buy DVD's all the time but just stopped unless we really love it. My son really wants Transformers and we rented it and he watched 3 times. I will probably get him that for Christmas.

I have used a site ch.com - Sign up and get 2 FREE DVDs, plus discounts, deals and offers on DVDs and more . You pay a one time fee of $9.95 and you get two free dvds with that fee. You always have free shipping and there is no commitment involved. Their prices are usually a few dollars cheaper than the stores and they have a pretty good selection. They are a division of Columbia House (a better one I think). You can contact me or post a reply if you have any questions.
