I haven't been to a movie in a while, but although i don't enjoy overpaying, my answer would have to be... sometimes. If im with DH, he wouldn't sneak food/drink in. If it was up to me, i would.

I always buy popcorn from the concession stand but will sneak in other things. One of our theatres doesn't care and I've seen people bring in coffee, wendy's combo meals, etc without even trying to hide it.

At the showcase cinemas in MA they allow you to bring in whatever you want, openly, thank goodness. It may be wrong for those of you "sneaking" but it is also wrong that the company "price gouges". Personally, I can go 2 hours without eating, so it's not an issue for me, but I think the theaters really take advantage of their "captive" audience and charge extremely overpriced items.

we head to the theatre in our old town and normally drop DD 3 off with my parents down the road we get 2 adults 2 kids, large popcorn, 1 large drink, 2 small drinks, and 2 candies for around $18 which is not too bad in my opinion its a once a month thing we do we call it SPLURGING.
We have a dollar cinema but the drinks and popcorn are soooo expensive there I bring our own drinks, and buy the popcorn only there (its a must) so i believe $8 for all of us. I prefer the theatre in our old town though same distance

I bring my own food in. We have coupon for small popcorn so we get that, and i bring 2 juice boxes and small water bottle for me. I will not buy my kids soda, so when they start offereing juice or milk maybe ill buy it there. As for water no way am I paying $2 for a bottle. So i put in in my coat pocket. Im sure the ushers or who ever can see it I am not hoarding it. And we take one box of candy we got from store for .89. I cannot see paying $4 for same box there. Especially after paying the high prices to get in. So I figure they are getting $20 for a movie, and that is well enough.
Now I dont say to the kids lets sneak this food in, in fact we never talk about it. They each grab juice and put in coat pocket, and I put candy in my purse ( there is always candy in there) and we go. If I dont bring anything we get nothing. I mean who cant wait an hour and half for movie to be done to eat healthy or normal food for normal price.
I think its a rip off to charge that for movie, food should be free IMO! SO no its not a rip off for us to bring things we bought and paid for into a movie we over paid for.

I do both. I will pack candy in my purse for the kids but the popcorn has to be fresh. My DH and I buy a large drink to share and a tub of popcorn so I don't feel to bad about bringing in candy.

This is really funny...we rarely go to the movies as it can be expensive for seven of us but I had never thought of sneaking in anything but the girls had a four day weekend last weekend & I thought I should do somthing with them and we did go to the movies and after reading about this here, I did stop & buy some candy & put in my purse...I did buy popcorn & pop there, at first I was nervous but in the end I know it saved me some money and when I was paying I think the cashier saw the candy in my purse but she just smiled & did not say anything, so I don't feel too bad about it.

You know, as a Christian, I've battled with the thought of bringing in food from the inside. I felt as though I was cheating them in some way.
But, after thinking about it and analyzing it, I don't think it's wrong to have snacks in my purse. Afterall, if they feel they can rip the eyes out of my head by charging exhorbanant prices for snacks, they're the ones abusing me. If they really charged reasonable, fair prices for snacks and such I'd buy it from them. I have no guilt over this one anymore. Why should I be blatantly taken advantage of when I am the one who is in control of my own finances.
When I shop at grocery stores, furniture stores, or any place, do I buy from the most expensive dealer? No. Why should I allow a movie theater to rape my wallet because they're greedy?

Also, I wanted to add...what if I don't want popcorn, soda or sweet-laden candy, which I don't. Should I be penalized and watch a movie without a snack because I didn't buy it from them? I normally have gum, water or a snack in my purse because of low blood sugar. Should I remove them when I get into the theater? I think not.
Now, would I go into a restaurant and bring my own food or drink? No...because the establishment is in the food business trying to make a living off selling food.
The movie theater is just that. A place to watch a movie. They decided to add on a concession stand to bring up their bottom line profit. I do not have to add to it if I don't wish. I'm paying their required price for the movie ticket and I'm not sneaking around the counter to get in without paying, so I personally don't see the problem bringing my own choice of snacks. I am not stealing...so, no guilt.

DH and I rarely go tot he movies and if we do I bring in my own popcorn (lowfat - would never do the million grams of fat one from the theater) as well as Sour Patch Kids and Twizzlers from the store. for .99 cents. I cannot see paying their hig concession costs when it already costs $10 per adult per movie. DS is 3 so no movies yet for him. When we do, he'll get the whole experience including using the concession stand.
