When you're on vacation, what kind of souvenirs do you buy when money is tight? Have you found ways to get souvenirs at discount prices? Do you have kids "earn" their souvenirs in any way?

When we were overseas & wanted to bring back gifts for friends & family that didn't cost much or take up much room in the luggage, we brought back decks of cards. The back featured photos of where we were, and most families like cards. Of course, if there was something the region was really known for - if we could find it and afford it & it was appropriate, we'd get that. But we'd still buy decks of cards for folks we 'forgot" or as extra gifts.

This might seem boring, but I like to buy magnets from the places we go. I keep them on the fridge so I am able to see them often, which reminds me of the fun time we had there. I even have a glow-in-the-dark one (of a cave) from Carlsbad Caverns - which we visited last summer. Every time I look at it I remember how neat it was.

I also have my Dads' magnets he collected from Hungary, Spain, Jerusalem, Nova Scotia, Maine, Germany, etc. Every time I look at them I am reminded of his stories of visiting there.

If not magnets, I like T-Shirts though. If I can afford them.

We do magnets too! We keep them on our door that leads to the garage.

OH, I know!! I read somewhere once that collecting free souvenirs could be as simple as gathering up napkins (with the places' name on them), matchbook covers, airline tickets, park tickets, arm bands, menus, stuff from the visitors center, etc. (I can't remember what all they suggested you try and look for) and then making a scrapbook with what you have.

But, I think at Disney there are a number of free souvenirs to be had, that certain places will give you - just for the asking!! Let me try to find that website again and I'll post it! They give the names of places there that will give you free stuff!!

I often do magnets, thimbles, and spoons. We have collectors in my family. I also do t-shirts.

Here's a link that lists several free souvenirs to be found at Disney: Save money at Walt Disney World

I also read once about how some Moms will buy their DDs charm bracelets, and then buy them a charm for it from every place they visit. Something that reminds them of the place. I thought that was a cool idea. Not too expensive. Probably no more expensive than most T-shirts would be...

I've also heard that the best place to buy souvenirs in a town where a major attraction or vacation spot is - is at mass merchandise, big box, dollar stores, or even convenience stores. And like in Panama City, FL. for instance, you can go to the beach and buy an airbrushed T-shirt OR pay half that amount and get one airbrushed right in the middle Walmart!! They actually have (or at least they did have...) a whole souvenir section there.
