We are finally getting away !!! DH has a conference in Vegas in May. Any cheap/free ideas to do? I'm going to be on my own for two days while he is working. I will be on foot mostly. I can take a taxi but not very far from the strip.

Don't eat at the buffets in the hotels...that will break the bank. There are plenty of places on the strip you can eat at for a fraction of the cost.

Walk the strip - see the pirate fight in front of Treasure Island, the volcano erupt in front of Mirage - walk through the Venetian as it's positively gorgeous and very european. See the fountain display in front of Bellagio - especially beautiful at night. Walk the mall in Ceasar's Palace - there are gorgeous giant aquariums at the very end, some sort of free show (I just missed it) and "living statues" that are really cool to watch. The kids will like the M&M store w/ every color M&M you can imagine. At the Flamingo hotel, there is a tropical bird exhibit - it is free - just go in and follow the signs until you find it. At the Mirage, there is an area where some of those white tigers were on exhibit - that was free - but off the pool they have "Seigfried and Roy's Secret Garden" - I think it was $10 per adult to get in, this was back around 2000 - but it was worth it. The tigers were gorgeous. There were dolphins and some other animals too.

Dh & I take the Deuce bus, you can buy a 24 hr pass for $5 ea. It goes up and down the strip and to Fremont street. Runs 24 hrs a day. Taxis are too expensve, especially during rush hour.
But when you leave the airport, if you catch a taxi or a shuttle bus there's usually brochure/coupon books - take them. In your hotel room theres a Whats On Magazine. It too has fun things to do and coupons.

As for buffets, the best Ive been to is off the strip. Red Rock Canyon Resort has a great buffet.
Look online for Vegas coupons, just Google it. Also most casinos have those players club cards and sometimes they will give you a free gift if you sign up. Signing up is free. Thats how I got alot of free tshirt/mugs.

Theres just so much to do there, be sure to wear good walking shoes! I also recommend using a backpack (if you plan to shop) so you can carry the things you buy and carry a small purse and put it inside the main part of your backpack. I think its a safer way to carry your purse. Plus that way you can carry a water bottle / snacks.
