Has anyone traveled by train to take a vacation or to go on a trip? Was it cheaper than flying? Was it fun or long and boring?

We traveled by train around Switzerland and France...and traveled by car. I have to say though, I prefer driving. It's just my personality. We haven't traveled by train in the US. My sister often takes Amtrak, and sometimes it's super cheap and sometimes it's not...it just depends on your individual situation.

i haven't done it since 1994, but i was on a train from Ventura California all the way to Savannah Georgia! I loved it. there were some slow times, but i only paid around $250 for the train ticket. way cheaper for a cross country trip! At one point, an escaped convict from Louisiana got onto our train and we were delayed in New Orleans for about 12 hours, which was fun to me (i was 18 at the time). I would definitely check into it.

Funny that you asked. We're taking the train to Montreal this weekend! It's going to be a 7 hour journey each way. I'm bringing books, my ipod, and my dh. It will be like one long date.

I've done commuter trains in Europe, but not an extended train trip. I think I may have to add that to my "bucket list."

In Europe a lot. It is THE way to travel in Europe, in my opinion. But I've heard bad stories from people who have tried it in the US--mostly just really long delays, nothing dangerous, but several people have complained about it taking longer than it would in a car. I would like to try it here sometime, though, to see.

My MIL always took AMTRAK when she'd travel from Missouri to California. She hated planes and wasn't well enough to drive herself. The only complaint that she ever had (that I know of) is that she thought the dining car prices were high. She was pretty frugal, though, and packed her own sandwiches for the trip. In general she really enjoyed the train trips she took. She did grow up in Poland and I believe train travel was pretty commonplace there.

I've done the California-Missouri route, though not for a really long time. I don't really remember much, but I thought it was an enjoyable time. I was in Switzerland and we took a train from Zurich to San Moritz to Zermatt on a long weekend and it was great!

My sister and I were looking at the prices for both trains and plane tickets from MT to PA and you really weren't saving anything.

My husband took a train one in college, I believe from Chicago to Colorado. He said it was awful! It took forever, tons of stops and was boring. He said the people that got on on the east coast and were heading to the west coast had started to smell by the time the train arrived in Chicago. I have always wanted to take a train somewhere, it always sounded fun to me but I think he talked me out of it.
