Same thing happened to my dad. CC company was completely unhelpful until he produced his receipt and the restaurant couldn't figure out which person did it. It wasn't his waitress that rung him up. She got a $20.00 tip and completely got away with it.

We always just write "cash on table" in the tip space. then there is no way they can change the bill.

Sometimes even writing somethin on the tip line doesn't stop them. One of my friends ate out at a restaurant here in town and put a tip on the tip line w/ her cc. When "someone" typed in the $$$ amount, they put in whatever tip they wanted. She caught it by going home and checking her account online. She called the restaurant and they changed it back because she still had her receipt. PEOPLE ARE BRAVE and who would catch that at the end of the month when the statement comes in. I wouldn't. I just look at the bill and look at the purchases and they all seem reasonable. I have another friend who works in the restaurant bus. and said that when you leave a cc tip, someone has to go back through and hand type that in.......so it is very EASY for "someone' to add a few bucks!! I think I'll just leave a check from now on!

Just curious... what happened? I hope you did go back and confront the store?
If I was the manager, that waitress would be soooooo FIRED!

Thanks for sharing! It never would have occurred to me to take such precautions until after reading all these stories.

We do this also and be sure to fill out the total amount the same as the CC charge amount. That makes it harder to change also.

Thanks so much for bringing this to my attention. It never would have occured to me! I wonder how many times we have been ripped off. We put all our expenses on our CC and pay it off each month to get the points so our CC bill is always very high. We never go through it with a fine tooth comb. I will be changing the way I deal with receipts at restaurants from now on!

Turns out the waitress wasn't satisfied with her tip so she took it upon herself to add a $10 tip on the credit card receipt where my husband signed his name!! He has a habit of just signing the receipt when we dine out and leaving the tip part blank if we tip in cash. BEWARE! When I ran a business a few years back, one of my employees did the same thing to a man but he didn't know about it until I contacted him after seeing it in her handwritting. He wasn't happy either and wanted her to return the money but she quit and my business ended up refunding the man.
I always try to remember to put a line through the tip part if I am not leaving one. My brother taught me this before otherwise I wouldn't have realized. A ten dollar tip is ridiculous I hope you complained to the restaurant.

I'm curious too.

I think this thread has scared me out of ever charging at a restaurant again. I'm paying cash from here on in.

That kind of thing would make me so angry.
