My husband and I went to a local restaurant (David's Catfish House) and ordered our meal then he paid by credit card and tipped the waitress cash. The service was okay and we THOUGHT the evening there went well UNTIL we get the bank statement in and see that the bill was $10.00 over what we were charged!! Turns out the waitress wasn't satisfied with her tip so she took it upon herself to add a $10 tip on the credit card receipt where my husband signed his name!! He has a habit of just signing the receipt when we dine out and leaving the tip part blank if we tip in cash. BEWARE! When I ran a business a few years back, one of my employees did the same thing to a man but he didn't know about it until I contacted him after seeing it in her handwritting. He wasn't happy either and wanted her to return the money but she quit and my business ended up refunding the man.

When we pay with the cc and tip in cash we always fill out the receipt. We put the amount down and then put a squiggly line through the tip part. Checking your statements thoroughly is a great idea too.

I hope you called the restaurant and gave them hell...that waitress should be fired and prosecuted. Its cc fraud in my book!

Ick! That really sucks. I always cross it out and circle the correct amount on the total line. If all the #'s of your cc show, you can cross those out too. They have all your info anyway, but it isn't available to anyone but the manager of the facility.

This happened to my friend with Pizza Hut delivery one year. The guy changed a 3$ tip to a $13 tip.
I think most people wouldnt notice and that's why they take the chance. It does suck.

I always make sure to put a line thru the tip part - now im thinking maybe we should write in "cash" on the tip line. Did you call the restaurant? If she added in the $10, did she also then change the handwritten total? Unbelievable what people will do. Make an extra $10 - and possibly lose your job over it if she gets caught.

omg that's insane! i really hope you called the restaurant. i always pay tips in cash too unless we don't have enough cash on hand. i put a zero in the tip line and the total amount in the line under where it says total. wow i wouldn't even think someone would do that. what a total dishonest blank im so sorry this happened to you. thanks for the heads up.

Well we went out for V-day dinner 2 years ago. My husband filled in the tip amount and it ended up being an odd amount ($9.36), so that he could make the bill an even amount. Well the waitress decided also that the tip was not enough, so she added a 2 in front of the 9 and gave herself a 29.36 tip. Well went I checked the bank statement online and notice the 20 difference I called the restaurant and had my receipt pulled. They refunded me my 20.00.

When they pulled the receipt, the girl had added a very little 2 in front of the 9, because my husband had actually added the $ in front of the 9.

So be very careful.

This Is Very Important to Do.

Mistakes Happen all the Time with Charge Tips ,
I Can See How People Can Be dishonest.
But Even If you write 2.00 It can Be mistakenly Read as 5.00 And Put into the Machine.

Also , Save your Receipt For your Own Proof Of What YOU signed for.

Another Thing To Be Sure You are in the know About is Whether a Gratuity is Added to Your Bill Or Not. Then You Don't Have to Leave any Tip.

If a restaurant Charges this they Should Have this info on the Menu and It is Usually 8 or More. Although I Have seen it as low as 6 And Yes Kids do Count in that amount
