Anyone have anything to suggest, from lodging to eating out affordably to fun activities for kids? We've never been there and are considering it for this summer.

We live pretty close to MB and, other than the beach (which is the BEST attraction anyway ) I don't know of any money saving tips. I am really interested in hearing what some others may say.
Some friends have gone to Hard Rock Park and Alligator Adventure and sing their praises. We love love love all of the shows at House of Blues, Alabama Theater, etc. None of these are money saving AT ALL though.
Oh, I am not sure, but it may be cheaper to stay in Garden City (south) or Cherry Grove (north). Maybe look into those. They are only minutes away.

We just returned from Myrtle Beach on Monday night but we were there for the NASCAR race in Darlington so it was not a frugal trip for us. Not sure what there is for kids to do, we didn't take ours. The beach was beautiful and we could see it from our hotel room.

We went there in spring 2006--can't say I have frugal tips specifically for there, other than the beach as was noted earlier. It's like there's the beach....and then there's lots of expensive attractions. We did the Ripley's Aquarium, Dixie Stampede, and went to Broadway at the Beach, which is mostly shopping, etc. I'm glad that we went, and my daughter enjoyed it, but as a tourist I'm not sure of a lot of low cost activities. I would also be interested to know of any that do exist....

I was going to suggest there when you mentioned you were wanting a beach vacation. My friend just got back today so I'll ask if she has any great suggestions. I just talked to her briefly but she said she LOVED it and is planning on going back next year. I think she stayed in a timeshare though. I would look to see if there are any vacation homes/condos/timeshares you can rent. I won't stay in a traditional hotel with the kids if I have the option and I can usually find something to rent that is cheaper than a suite at a hotel with lots of room, usually with a full kitchen and at least two bedrooms.

We were there last year and loved it- we would be going this year if it was not for moving though! There is a good mix of activities there that range in price so even on a low budget- you can find a ton of things. We stayed at the northern end of Myrtle Beach-not North Myrtle Beach though (more quiet- not too many people, the beach was nice). There is a ton of hotels that offers packages- we stayed at a place right on the beach that had free Hot breakfast every morning and had a kitchen (we would eat lunch at our room every day). If you go out to eat- the most reasonable best food was River City Cafe- they have a relaxing yet fun atmoshpere (a place where you can eat peanuts and though the shells on the floor, you can write all over the place with markers)- the portions are huge and the had the best onion rings I ever had! If you want to do a dinner show (entertainment and dinner!) we went to Dixie Stampede- the food and show was good (go earlier for the preshow)- last year at the entrance of Ripley's Aquarium they had really good coupons- I believe it was $10 off. On that note- we did not care for Ripley's Aquarium- it was a lot of money for not a whole lot (yes parts was nice but really was not worth that much money- it may be worth it if you get a ticket for 3 Ripley's Attractions though).
My favorite thing was taking a picture with a Tiger at Barefoot Landing- it cost $40 BUT it was a donation to the peoples Animal Reserve (I forget the name at the moment)- but it is our favorite family picture.
BTW- we stayed at Monterey Bay Resorts, it was nice inside and at a quieter section of the beach (There was stainless steel appliances, marble counter tops, it was nice and clean- also a few different pools and a private entrance to the beach)- and the best part was the price was really reasonable.

I went in 2005 and I stayed at the Patrica Grand Hotel. It wasn't cheap. Well it was because we went and listened to a timeshare thing well actually we didnt we were signed up but my friend didnt make enough so we left the time share place. But it was fun. All we did was go to the beach. Sorry not much help. Have fun though

We went last year and had a great time. We stayed at the sea dip motel, its on the water, has full kitchens, large rooms etc. We had an ocean front room and the motel has 3 pools.
It was very affordable, much cheaper than the others.

When I was a lot younger mom would take us on vacations. I think I was a teen, I think 15 or 16, when we went to the Carolinas. We went to Myrtle Beach, but there were WAY too many people for us, the beach was packed. I guess we're shy LOL!
Anyway, a few miles south (10 maybe?) of Myrtle Beach is Huntington Beach State Park. We LOVED it. There is a "castle" there that they do tours of, the beach is great and only a few people on it, we saw dolphins, and the freshwater lake that you drive over to get to the beach has lots of alligators in it. We were also thrilled by the flying fish!
Here's the site:
About This Park - Huntington Beach State Park - South Carolina Parks
Across from the park is Brookgreen Gardens, it has tons of statues. I was into photography then, so I really liked going there. I went through tons of film. Looks like they have a zoo now too. I want to go back now and take more pictures!
Brookgreen Gardens -- Ever Changing. Simply Amazing.
We went down a second time and did the same thing. I think we stayed in a motel close to the park, since we would spend all day playing on the beach and whatnot. I liked to draw, and would spend hours on the beach when the tide was going out, making things in the sand...like a couple hundred yards of drawings. If you're looking to run into a ton of people, it's not the place to go - usually there were two or three other families on the whole beach, and a handful of couples.
