For my goddaughters birthday one year we bought all sorts of toppings for ice cream and let the kids make their own sundaes. We bought 2 store brand HUGE things of napoleon ice cream and store brand toppings. The party was such a success. I think this was one if the cheaper birthday parties that we have had for her.

These are fabulous ideas! Too bad I didn't have these ideas back in 1993 when I started the whole birthday party rat race with my 1st son LOL!

What I also really need are ideas on how to be more frugal with the purchasing of gifts for the parties my son (6) goes to. We are being SLAMMED with birthdays this year (the last 2 months alone have had at least one party a weekend!!!!!). CALGON take me away haha!

For DS birthday this year, he wants a spongebob Halloween party. I am trying to figure out how to do the spongebob. I am going to do the dollar store for the halloween. Any ideas??? Everyone is going to wear their costumes.

One idea for the spongebob party. You could go to the Nick website and many times they have printables. I know my daughter had a Dora party and they even had free printable invitations

We just celebrated our dd's 7th birthday. Instead of buying a pinata, games/activities, and making treat bags -- we kept the cost of the party down by:

1) using coloring pages printed from the internet. We then held a coloring contest (everyone won, of course);

2) played simon says;

3) played "Musical Polka Dots" (the party decorations/theme was polka dots), numbered dots on the floor & when the music stopped, the children stopped. If their number was called, they were out;

4) played "Mystery Box" -- I took a big box & wrapped it up with several items of my daughters (e.g. a headband, a flip flop, a stuffed animal, etc). The children were blindfolded & had to guess what they felt inside the box, PLUS remember as many as they could.

With all of the games the children were able to pick from a "prize basket" which was filled with kid-friendly items from the Dollar Tree (e.g. crazy straws, pencils, hair barrettes, etc.).

By the end of the party everyone had a treat bag filled and smiles on their faces.
