I've read several threads in the past where people have bought jeans for $5 or less at the thrift store and they've looked great. For those of you who've done this, how do you do it? How do you get such a great fit? Do you look for a certain brand that you know is going to fit you and only buy those? Are you one of those lucky people that all size 8, 10, or whatever size of any jeans always fits you well?

I have a horrible time finding NEW jeans that fit well (I have a big butt and tiny bird legs -- I guess there aren't too many big butt/bird leg women in the world ), so I can't imagine getting an even halfway decent fit from second-hand jeans.

I go through each and every pair of jeans that are in my size, and then pick out the brands/fits that I know will be comfortable. Last month I bought a pair of Gap Long and Lean jeans in like new condition, and my new favorites are a pair of brand new looking Tilt Jeans. Each was 3.99

it will take time, but like daisymum said, pick up a bunch and try them on. many thrift stores have fitting rooms. you may try looking at sizes other than the one you normally wear, because every manufacturer has their own style. i have a wide ranges of sizes i can fit depending on the manufacturer and cut of the jeans.

when you first look at a rack of jeans, it seems daunting because they all look the same and i've not known many thrift stores with good organization. so if you want a really nice pair, look at the edge that sticks out and just weed over the ones that look faded/ torn. the initial check will eliminate a few.

I usually know which brands will work and then I find a bunch of them and then go try them on, most of the time I can just eyeball the fit because I already own that type/brand and know that it will work. Most of the thrift stores that I shop at won't hang out worn out jeans so then it takes less time to do.

You just have to try on LOTS and LOTS of them to find one that works.

That's what I did. I picked out 6 "cute" pairs and tried them all on, then bought the two that fit the best. I'm pregnant, so the sizes didn't help me much that time. The ones I bought were $4 and $6.

I go through every pair on the rack and pull out the ones in my size, as well as the ones that may not be my exact size but look like they might fit, and try them on. It takes time, but I consider the time spent worth the money saved.

patience it takes time like the others have said you need to try on several and you also have to frequent the stores since most get new stuff in on a regular basis. It can be hit or miss ya just have to keep looking.

Bring or wear a pair of shoes you are most likely to wear with the jeans (gym shoes, casual shoes, heels, etc). In the past I have found great jeans and when I paired them up with shoes at home they were too short, even though they appeared to be long enough in bare feet when trying on or with the shoes I had.

I love and prefer Goodwill because they are clean, have fitting rooms and I can bring up to 15 items into the fitting room at one time. My local store sorts by color and S-M-L-XL. I check all sizes because clothes are always put away or left on different racks.

Good luck and remember it is the thrill of the hunt. Don't go in expecting to find a perfect pair or you will be disappointed and discouraged. Try again another day!

For my kids it is easy to shop for. I just grab their sizes and they always seem to work. For me, however, I literally go through ALL the jeans and check out every single pair in my size. Yes, it takes me a lot of time, but it is worth every penny that it saves. I can't believe the great deals you can find at thrift stores.
