I consign everything that I can. I had a yard sale in May, I had a lot of stuff since we had moved in Nov. and my sister had also moved, but it is a lot of work and I'm not planning on having one again any time soon. If my clothes aren't consignable, I either give them to a friend as a 'hand me down' or I donate them.

All the above.
I consign some of the really nice, brand-new items.
Right now we're having a 'free sale'. OMG, two cars just pulled up - . DD is having a lemonade stand too so she earns a few extra bucks from the traffic. I have only a couple of items out there (a kids bike and a couple of booster seats) that DD can sell if someone shows interest. Everything else is free. I don't do that often, though. I've pretty much given up on traditional yard sales.
Some items I give to the recycling center. It is amazing what they take. If the item is still useful then they put it out on shelfs for people to take. We get stuff from the recycling center, too.
Then we also take stuff to the thrift store or have them pick-up. We have one place that calls us monthly for a pick-up. I'll probably have more stuff for them next month because by then I'll have cleaned out my closet again.

Mostly donate or give to someone that has smaller children than me. I am done with freecycle. Unless someone specifically asks for something that I have. I got put on moderation for a small offense(in the few years I was on freecycle, I hit reply all on mistake one time, and they won't take me off moderation now) so I don't post anything anymore. I never bother with the tax write off. Just take it in and drop it off at the appropriate place. Most of the time I just put it in the Planet aid box. I know a lot of people don't agree with that, but I don't usually have the time to go all the way to the other side of town, and drive to the back of the building and hope there is someone available to go through my stuff.
If anything has a stain or a rip, I throw it out. I don't know why anyone donates that stuff. There are places that will take that stuff for recycling, so if someone really hates to throw things out, they should look for those places.
I will go to a friends yard sale when she is having one, if I have stuff to get rid of. I just never have enough stuff of my own to draw any interest.
I have never tried consignment, and probably never will.

I too wondered why people donate stained items!! I was overheard making that comment to a friend at a thrift store and I was informed that stuff we may consider "garbage due to a small stain" may actually be someone else's child's "nice clothes". That put it all into perspective for me~ things that are still in good shape but may have a mark or whatever that *I* maybe wouldn't put on my kids may still be needed/ wanted by someone going through really hard times.

We always donate.
My charity of choice picks up items twice a week in our area, so it's super convenient to make a call ahead and have the stuff ready to go.
Went I want things out of my home, I want them out now! I don't have the desire, time, or storage space to have garage sales anymore.

We live too far off the main road to do a yard sale so I take the good shape name brand things to Once Upon a Child. Anything else that is in decent shape goes to Goodwill or the Salvation Army thrift stores.

I will give thing to people I know can use them. I also have a yearly garage sale. Sometimes I save leftovers in the attic for the next year and sometimes I donate it all the to Neighborhood Service Center.
We don't have anywhere to consign things at.

It depends on the situation and the item - how much money is it worth, do I want to have to store it, is trying to sell it going to be more trouble than it's worth?
Most of the time, I donate simply because I don't have a lot of space to store things until I have enough stuff to make a garage sale worth the effort.
When my old van developed major electrical issues, I donated it to St Vincent de Paul - I signed the back of the title and mailed it to them, and they sent a wrecker for it. The junkyards around here don't pick up, so I would have had to pay to have it towed if I had sold it for scrap. This way, SVDP sold it for scrap, got the money, and I got a tax deduction for the amount that they sold it for. Win-win.
