Nope, at most just a few things where needed. I'm bad about never making time to hit the thrift stores but we did last week - DH was looking for shorts for work, and got a few things for DD. Including a denim skirt that actually comes to her knees! She never wears skirts or dresses because she's so tall & thin that if they fit her waist they are waaaaayyy to short. She was so happy.
We buy new sneakers before school starts, new sandals when the weather warms up around April-ish, dress shoes on a need basis.

as for back to school shopping. I never go back to school shopping for clothes, until my son needs something. He usually wears shorts until to gets to cold, you never know what the weather will be in Michigan. As for school supplies, the teachers will let us know what they want him to have. Last year Staples had a wonderful back to school sale. It started on Sunday and alot of the items where sold out by Monday. This year I get there on Sunday and get some things that he might need.

The first two years our daughter was in school we spent a small fortune on school clothes and shoes. Bought her nice expensive shoes, and a tons of cute yet cool clothes and new hair bows and everything. We wanted our daughter to go to school in style! But we got sick and tired of her wearing an outfit once or twice and it was ruined. The expensive shoes ruined from running on the playground and at gym. And her expensive clothes ruined from sitting on the floor at assemblies, lunches, and recess. So, after that, we put our kids in play clothes for school. They were still nice, clean and ironed. Nothing holey, trashy or ruined, just play clothes. We saved the nice clothes and shoes for going out or whatever.
Now we homeschool, so we dress playful and comfy!

My ds gets a new outfit for the first day of school, and a new pair of shoes. Then I buy new clothes in the fall when it starts getting cooler.

Yes, I buy all clothes for the kids. Whenever a store does their end of season clearance, I stock up for the next year (I buy a size or two larger than they are now). I don't buy anything that's the latest fad or else by the time the following year roles around, it'll be played out. My youngest gets the hand me downs, and when he outgrows those, we donate them.
When school starts here, it's still warm until around mid to late October. Because I shopped the summer clearance sale LAST year, they have clothes that will get them through the first month and a half of warmer weather. They already have their winter coats, too which I purchased last year.
The only things I wait to buy are back to school supplies (the school gives them a list of required stuff), sneakers/shoes (I make them try them on) and underwear/undershirts/socks.
This works really well for us so far.

Must be nice not to have to pay tax!! Arizona wasn't on that list
My ds is only 2 so we don't have to worry about that yet. But for me, since I'm a teacher, I always do some back to school clothes shopping for me! =) I check out sales and my family usually gives me a gift cert. somewhere to help out!
Growing up we ALWAYS went back to school clothes shopping, I loved it! I'm not sure what I'm going to do with ds though...

I have four daughters and have never done a big 'back to school' shopping trip. They usually end up with a couple of new outfits throughout the summer that they can start the school year with. After school starts, you get a better idea of what everyone is wearing 'this year'. Though we've never been trendy, I don't think it hurts to let the girls somewhat dress 'in style' so they are relatively comfortable with what they wear. So a few weeks after school starts, we make a trip to the outlets and they purchase their own clothes with their own money they made from our annual fmily garage sale.

My son will be 7 this month and I usually get him a few new items to kick off the new school year. I get him new stuff thats usually on clearance. But at this age he can get away with wearing last seasons fashions (lol)

That's exactly what I did! All DS needs is 2 new pairs of jeans (That can wait til Sept or Oct to buy) socks, underwear, and shoes.
Luckily my aunt gave me a few brand new shirts for DS as well that he will grow into by the fall, and they will fit though the spring too, as long as he doesn't have a growth spurt Which, of course now that I said that he will.....
