Yes, we reuse if possible. I do by a few of the cheap things new, so the excitement is still there. We reuse more now that the girls are older (19, 17, 11, 8). We tend to steer them away from trendy character backpacks and lunchboxes also.

I reuse backpacks, lunchboxes, and their pencil boxes (this year will be the first time reusing pencil boxes) I have 6 pencil boxes laying aroud the house from over the few years they have been in school. And I am thinking HOLY COW they can reuse those. I tried backpacks and lunch boxes from Walmart/Target and they start getting holes in them by the end of the year. So I bought their backpacks and lunchboxes from LLBean a few years ago. They were a little pricey, but so worth it for the quality. We have had them for 3 years and they still look new.

My kids that are in school are in middle school and high school and they aren't allowed to have backpacks. We do reusue lunch boxes if they are in good shape. My kids rarely have any supplies left over. I haven't even looked at their school supply list yet.
