I think that makes a difference too. When I seem really enthused and spend a lot of time with dd admiring or enjoying a certain toy then she seems to react well to it. Especially when I tell her I used to love it as a kid. Legos and blocks are the exception - kids just automatically love those.

My girls are older now too- but their favorites were:
Dressups (my old prom and bridesmaid dresses!)
Polly Pockets
American Girl Dolls and Bitty Babies (and the handmade clothes I made for them)
Little Tykes kitchen
and- a Happy Pot- which I picked up in the cheapie toy section of the grocery store. It is a plastic pot with a face painted on it, with a lid, a big plastic spoon and three pieces of plastic fruit.
They never really played with most of the other toys they got. We called them "5 minuters" because that's how long they were played with.

I will be the first in saying the XBOX 360...i guess not really considered a toy but it certainly was worth the money we paid. Of course the actual "toys" would be the Lincoln Logs....we all love to build w/ those.

Well with 4 girls who pass everything down, most anything we buy is worth it...however the thing that sticks out in my head the most is our HUGE toy kitchen. After struggling with having to pay $120 for it, "Santa" gave it to my odest DD when she turned 2. Since then it has gotten played with tremendously over the years ~ and it probably still has great garage sale vaule (as we still have all the pieces, and it's not broken in any way.)

When my kids were really young, I would say our best "toy" was the exersaucer. All of my kids LOVED it and it gave me time to get things done.

Just about any doll for DD is a great buy. Wooden blocks, Matchbox cars, tea set, a little riding toy that I don't know the name of, but all the kids love.

We bought a DS for our DS on his 4th birthday. He just turned 5 last week and still loves it. It was especially great for our trip to MN in May and when we flew to OH at Thanksgiving. He'll forget about it for a little while, but then he remembers it's there and we have to limit his time or he'll literally play from the time he wakes up until he goes to bed.

The Megnadoodle. Let's just say we had to buy 3, so we didn't have any more fights! We got the first one 3 years ago and they still haven't lost interest.

And of course, everything Star Wars, Spiderman or Transformers! And anything dress-up for DD.

The current fave for my 16 month old is her Little Tykes water table. If I could only think of a way to use it in the basement during winter...
