What toys/baby items did you think were a waste of money? I think the diaper genie was a waste. I thought the liners were expensive when a free plastic grocery sack does the same thing. I also hated changing it out.
Toy wise I thought all the Elmo things like Tickle Me Elmo were a waste. My kids played with them for a few weeks then they ended up in the toychest and later donated to Goodwill. Plus some of them had a annoyance factor for parents.

Def. the diaper genie! Exactly what you said- the refills and changing the thing out. And I could still smell it even thought you aren't suposed to . Just use a little trash bag and take it out right away. Even buying big ziploc bags to put diapers in before you toss them in the reg. trash would be better and cheaper.
I knew before I bought one that I didn't want a changing table. I changed the kiddos on the floor. I guess if you had hard wood floors it might not work. I had a little pad for the top of the dresser to change them, but rarely used it.
Infant washclothes were a waste. Too small and thin.
Infant towels with the hoods were dumb. Real thin and too small. A normal fluffly bathtowel did the job.
Nursery decorations- big waste. the quilt that comes with the crib set. - never used it. Ended up putting it on the wall. we only used a crib for a year, then went to a toddler bed since dd was climbing the crib.
Never had a huge giant diaper bag. Mine was about the size of one of those soft lunchbags. I carried a bottle, a couple diapers, a few wipes. The huge diaper bag that was a gift lived in my car. It was totally jammed with goodies, but it never left hte car. It was just full so I wouldn't have to carry all that junk around.
also- other never used items- infant mittens- not sure why people use these? too hot - would you want little felt mitten things over your hands in the summer?
hats, bundling, swathing, I guess since I had a summer baby there were alot of things i never used.

Oh for toy items, I guess I'd say thie biggest waste is assuming my child is going to like something just because I did, or that all kids that age do, or whatever.
one dd never liked dolls, but before I realized that I was buying barbies and polly's and all that. You just assume that little girls are going to like them,. DD did play with baby dolls at a very young age 2, or 3. but never ever liked the barbie scene.
I bought playdough, remembering when I would spend HOURS playing with that- my kids never seemed to care. They really LOVED art supplies like crayons, markers ect. I loved coloring books, they ignored those and preferred lots of plain white paper to draw on. I liked craft supplies, gluing, feathesr, little trinkets, They never liked to make something out of nothing, but wanted craft kits.
so I guess that the best thing to know is your kids may not like the same things as you did, and study thier interests closely, before you waste money buying them toys that YOU liked as a kid, but they likely will care less about.

Diaper bag for sure. I had to have one, used it about 5 times and that's it. I plan on selling it and know I won't get the money for it.

Although my youngest son-6 has 2 favorite stuffed animals, most are just dust collectors.

definitely the diaper genie. I thought it would be great, but, hated changing it out and it ended up in the garage.
big diaper bag, yep, hated carrying it, changed to a backpack, so much easier.
mobile for his crib- he could care less, and when he got to be 1 he pulled it apart! LOL

I never got a diaper genie because too many of my friends hated theirs.
I didn't want a changing table, b/c I figured the floor was a safer place for the baby.
We did have a medium sized diaper bag, which I used all the time with DS#1, but got smart after that. I have a small backpack that I used to use as a purse and it's pretty cute. We use it for our diaper bag now and it fits everything we need and DH isn't embarrassed to carry it!
Jogging stroller - I got a double jogging stroller, b/c I was going to be so ambitious and go rollerblading with the kiddos in the stroller. Whatever. I've used it maybe twice and am putting it on Craigslist this week.
Stuffed animals - the kids have their 1 or 2 favorite ones, but the rest are just collecting dust.
Regular double stroller - ok, a neighbor gave us theirs (so luckily we didn't buy one), we used it once in two years and just gave it back last month. I guess this would have been more useful if it would have been a little smaller, but it was HUGE!
Mobile for the crib - We had a great one that played classical music and DH and I loved. Only problem was all of our kids were terrified of the thing! Our youngest liked the music, so we took off the hanging things and just had the music box attached to his crib.
20 onesies in newborn! - My oldest couldn't even wear newborn clothes! He was 8 1/2 lbs and went straight to the 0-3 months clothes.
