Instead of expensive dog dishes, put your pet's water in an angel food cake pan or Bundt pan and place a wooden state in the center to keep it from being carried off. Put the stake in the ground.

From the book Living on a Shoestring.

That wouldn't have worked for my Great Dane. We never did buy her a pet bowl. We used a small rubbermaid container for her dog food, and I just pulled a bowl out of the cupboard for her water. I raised it off the ground by setting it on top our shoe cubby.

That stinks that it probably wouldn't work for our labs either. They are so big, and neither one ever like where I put there bowls (which are really large old round cake pans I think)so they are always picking them up and moving them, then dumping them out and eating off the ground. The only reason I even put their food in a bowl at all, is to keep the ants from immediately taking over. If they want to dump it out when they are ready to eat, that's fine with me....weirdos.
Their water bowl stays under the spickett,(or however you spell that) and even though they have a pool full of water at all times, they dump that over as well to lay in in the mud, and drink out of their pool....I tell you, they are crazy!!
That is a really great idea though!!
