WE just adopted two new kitties from the Humane society one is 7 months the other is a year. Are there any good ideas to save money on the maintenance of cats? The more i read the more expensive they get with both dry and wet cat food that they need. We could not decide between the two they both needed a good home. thanks for any ideas at all

Make sure they are spayed and neutered! And congrats on your new babies.

I get my catfood from Costco. It is as cheap as I can find and it does not upset any of their stomachs. Anything I buy from the grocery store makes my cats sick and they eat about twice as much.

Same here, the Costco food is really similar to Science Diet Maintenance formula, but costs so much less.
I keep my kitties inside, it really reduces the health risks to them. It depends on where you live, growing up in a city I had a few kitties that were killed by cars so I don't take that risk anymore. Also, when you keep them inside, you don't have to keep up on their shots as much since they are not exposed to other animals and kitties.
Have fun with the new additions to your family!

And if you haven't already done it, sign up at purina, etc. to get coupons for cat food...walmart always has great cat food freebies (you can search thru this site). We rescued a dog last June and have yet to pay for dog food with all the coupons we've received .....thanks Mommysavers!

Congrats! Post some photos! My cats are ridiculously expensive (I would love just ONE year where one of them didn't run us over $1000 in vet bills) and two of them are on special meds, and two of them are on medication....I am so the wrong person to ask. But do get them fixed and keep them inside.

I have 3 cats and the vet bills are hard to avoid. As far as food, I buy the best food that I can get for a reasonable price. I do switch their food, but never on a daily basis. Mostly I switch every month. If it does upset them, it is usually only for a day. I love them but they are big eaters! I keep Revolution on them so I don't have to buy all those flea products. I get free litter from my DH's work (its actually oil absorbent, but its all natural) which I mix with some good litter for texture and smell. As far as wet food, I treat them to a can of tuna every now and then, unless I get wet food free.

I feed my cats Wal-Mart's Special Kitty dry cat food (the oldest cat will be 15 this summer). Have them spayed/neutered. Keeping them indoors will help keep them healthier (away from the dangers of other animals, etc.)--our outdoor kitty has been in many scrapes. For the litter box, I use a crystal-type litter and line the box with regular trash bags instead of the more expensive litter box liners. I also purchase their flea medications from 1-800-PetMeds.

I expect that most value cat food is made by the same people that make the expensive stuff. Maybe your vet can recommend something?
